Real world velocities from a 280AI

I have a Remmy 700 long action and have made my mind up on the 280AI. Im wondering what real world velocities are u guys seeing with the 139-140 grain bullets. Also how about the 162 -168 grain class.

Heres my velocities, 168gr bergers rl-17 2950fps from 23.5" krieger barrel good to 1000yards in moderate temps, same bullet with vihtavouri n-165 2880fps same gun, accuracy half moa to 600 yards, I can push rl-17 to 2970 with this gun but settled on the vn-165 fpr more temp stability. Rl-17 loses 50-75fps going from 15-70degrees and i hunt in cold weather most of the time.

i have had two, one for me and one for my son to load for and shoot built for hunting mulie/elk. built by R W Hart

700 trued, hightech stock, Hart 9twist 26", Lue 4.5x14 scopes weight 9 1/4 lb
used r/p brass sorted trimed flash hole cleaned --9 1/2 primers

with h4841 and h4350 both produced .300" groups with Sierra 140 sbt and Nosler 140 bt at 3140fps
with no pressure signs
with 160's the velocty was in the low 2900fps and shot in the high .3-low .4's

absolutely a superb chambering.

Remington 700 action/shilen 8 twist @ 27" i could get the berger 168 vld to 2980 fps with 61gr of h4831 or viht n165. Could get to 3080fps using Magpro.

Best accuracy was 59gr n165 at 2930 fps.

The 168 vld at 2980fps works perfectly with Nikons BDC reticle.

The same bullet at 2930fps works perfectly with the Zeiss z-600 reticle.

I just wish Zeiss offered the z-600 is a 14x or 16x.

I shoot a .280 AI, the basis of which is a factory remington .280 barrel which has been "improved". I can get slightly over 3000 (3025 perhaps) with 140 Barnes TSX and have tried several powders. I've standardized on RE22. I have heard that any reasonable .280 AI could attain 3200 with 140 grain bullets but I have not been able to approach that number. Could be that factory remington 7mm barrels are just "slow"? In any event, hundred pound whitetails at ethical sporter ranges under real world field conditions can't tell the difference.

Bugs, i agree with you on 3200. if that is crono, then two things, MUST be very long bbl, and/or shooter must be wearing a schrapnel vest and iron face mask, the risk is his shooting hand.

My experience pretty much mirrors the previous posts: mid 3100's for the 140-150 grain bullets and mid to high 2900's for the 160 grain - I never 'push' loads, rather stay on the conservative side and always inspect for pressure indicators. If you're looking for velocity in the 140, try 7828 - it has a rather narrow range of loads but it will get it out there - I have two 280AI's - in one, it shoots 1/2"-3/4" all day, in the other that powder is horrible. BTW my velocity experience is with 24"-25" barrels. Great round and the AI-formed case is low maintenance and brass lasts forever - I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
