300 yd 6BR Load

Would like some recommendations for load including choice of bullet for shooting 300 yds. I have Varget and CCI 450 primers . Barrel is an 8 twist .

Thanks
Joe

When I used a 6mmBR for 300 / 600 yard F-Open competition, I had a couple of GREAT loads.

1.) 105 Berger B/T with 30.4grs of VV N150.. This was my preferred load. I shot VERY well with this load.

2.) When they first came out with the 105 Hybrid, I simply switched to the Hybrid with the N150 load and it was off the scale.

3.) Berger 108 B/T with 30.6grs of VV N540. This was an excellent load>>> I would have used this load BUT at the time you had great difficulty obtaining N540. Why this was hard to get and N150 was not was disconcerting to me.

These will serve VERY well at BOTH 300 and 600.. But as you are aware, CAUTION should be used when attempting to duplicate someone else's load and EVERY barrel is different.. Some MINOR tweaking may be necessary. A bit of tweaking on the powder charge and most movement may come from seating depth>>>this is where you can turn a rifle on or end up in misery if you do not get the seating depth correct for your rifle!

Ben is right. Even my Dasher does not like it when I screw up the seating depth. Cost me a couple of matches before I got it sorted out.

Please also heed the advice to start low and work up. I've seen a 6BR case failure. Luckily the shooter was wearing safety glasses.

As far as bullets go any of the Berger bullets in the 105 - 108 grain range work very well. Don't discount the Sierra 107 SMK's either. Your rifle will tell you what it likes to eat. Using Varget powder start at 29.5 grs and work up. A lot of 6BR shooters say Around 30 - 30.4 is their accurate load. With VLD bullets start with them touching the lands then .010 jam, .015 jam. .010 off the lands, .020 off. Shooting 3 rd groups of each will let you know when your in the ball park for accuracy then you can start "fine tuning" the load.

On the odd chance that you have an 8 twist but your freebore won't let you shoot the 105-ish long, heavy pills.....

You might try the Berger 87 gr VLD Hunting or 90 gr match boat tail. I have used 30.7/30.8 gr of Varget.

WRT the 68s:

It depends on what game you are playing and the conditions.

I shoot the 90 Berger in a 10 twist straight 6 BR in a winter 300 yard varmint match. In that game, some people shoot their PPCs or 30 BRs. They do well till the wind gets switchy...then they get beat.

Hi Southj,
When I was working up a load for my 6BR at my home range which is 300 yards, I found a node quickly at the lower powder charge end and never looked further. At 300 yards it put five shots on a target that I could cover with a dime almost right out of the gate. I loaded five more of the same thing and it did it again so I looked no further. I now have a Magnetospeed where I didn't have anything before but have not yet checked the speed but I will sometime.

What I'm using is:
Lapua brass
Remington 7-1/2 primers
105 gr Berger VLD bullets
Varget 28.8 gr

As always start low and work up for safety, and maybe you'll even get lucky like I did and be finished in less than 50 shots. Oh, and this was in a 1:8 twist also.

Good Luck,
Jeff
