300 yard range in NC

Charlotte Rifle & Pistol does have 300 yds as mentioned in another post and membership is required. However, a full member (one no longer in conditional status) may take a guest. While the guest is shooting the member must not. They must switch off or take turns as the member is required to watch and supervise his or her guest. This may sound strict but knowing there are dwellings only 300 yds beyond the impact burm it is not at all an unreasonable requirement.

Location is in Union county NC.
From the North:
From downtown Charlotte (Intersection of I-85 and I-77). Take I-77 South (8 miles) and exit to I-485 East towards Pineville (go 6 miles). Exit south on Johnston Rd/Hwy 521, then take Hwy 521 South for 12 miles (into SC and past Indian Land School) to Jim Wilson Rd. Turn Left on to Jim Wilson Rd (go 2.7 miles to the NC/SC border). The range entrance is located on the left at the state line.

Thanks NCFrank, Im familiar with CRP, been to it a couple of time back in the day a coworker was a member and he actually offered to sponsor me but their requirements are a little too much for me. It is a nice place, just not my cup of tea.

Granted, CRPC is a bit steep.
Mecklenburg Wildlife has 100yd. and I believe Long Creek has 200yd. Last I heard they both had a back log of folks waiting to join.

Have you checked Rankin Lake range in Gaston County? I'm originally from Gaston but never shot at Rankin. I'm told it has a pretty good rifle range and there is some current expansion or will be expanding. Don't know if it's membership or open to public.

Thanks AR15.. Just gave them a call and they should call me back tomorrow with more information. This might be it, for the price, the cost and being so close to me it does look as a great option.

They dont have a website...

They don't have a firing range either. They go shoot in other clubs when they habe matches. I knew it sounded too good to be true.

Gents, LNHPC is a high power club and we do NOT have a range. We formed almost 10 yrs ago to further the sport of high power and, most importantly, help kids get into the sport. We have been pretty successful with that, I believe, including providing one of our jr shooters with a $2,000 college scholarship this fall. So we are active, just not publically and certainly not financially able to buy a bunch of land and build a range. Our club does use my range, but as its on my property, its not open to the public and we only have club matches when it works with my schedule and my wife gives me the ok to have a dozen or so club members out for a shoot. Sorry to disappoint.

My suggestion, however, (same one I gave Nandy, who I think I talked to just a bit ago) is for folks to get involved with organized competitive shooting and you will find out there really is no lack of places to go shoot. Now, if one just wants to go blasting, well, its time to pony up to join a private club, or, if you are really wanting to sink a bunch of money into it, buy property to build your own range.....I did, and dang, it aint cheap...trust me. :o

For the $$, I still think Cat Val and Rowan Wildlife are the best bang for the buck...no pun intended.

A little more info for researching ranges if you have not seen this already.

Until a year and so ago I did lived in the country, was renting a house with a bit of property where I could shoot if I wanted too but I did not out of respect of my elderly neighbors across the street. I had to move back to Charlotte not by choice but it was the right thing for my kids after my ex took off leaving them with me. Very complicated issue, so I will leave it at that.
I have no interest/time/money to spend in competitive shooting, at least not at this time. I do not mind paying a few hundred dollars to be in a club and work in the upkeep of the range as needed but I really have little time for anything else and it seems most other clubs need quite a bit of their members time. All I want is a safe place to shoot, that simple. Seems so far I will have to keep using the deer lease as firing range until something comes up.

John, I appreciate the time you took to call me and talk to me. I have to say I was not much disappointed, maybe just a little but I knew it was a long shot to find a firing range just outside of Charlotte that had up to 300 yds, a $45 membership fee and still looking for members... That was what it was too good to be true... I hope my post did not sounded negative in any way and wish you and your club the best of luck.

Trust me, I wish I could set up a public range in the LKN/Charlotte area and charge $45/yr but its not economically possible...not even close. ANd we did look into it, as I had a few investors that had some extra $$ and were shooters and wanted to do a range but with the cost of land, cost of moving dirt, liability, etc, we were talking millions. THen factor in the risk vs reward and its not worth it as most folks do not want to pay even a few hundred a year to shoot at a range and it takes a LOT of members at a couple hundred to make even the smallest venture work. Sad, but true.

On the competition side/idea, shooting HP doesnt mean you have to shoot every weekend. On the contrary, you can show up just one time, shoot and never shoot again. I thought that was what I was doing back in 2004 when I went to my first match (at Rowan), and well, someone got hooked. 8)
