300 yard cartridge

So a range I did not know existed is an hour from me, and they have a 300 yard range, and once a month they have 300 yard benchrest and 300 yard F-class matches. The rules for the bench matches are liberal, basically don't bring a rail gun and your good to go.

I currently own a 30BR and was thinking about using this for their 300 yard bench matches, but I was wondering what cartridge would be best for this? Is there a dual purpose round that would be great for both f class and bench? I have a stock, trigger and action, with 308, and 223 bolt faces ready for a barrel, and wondering what would be the best cartridge for the task? Never took the 30BR out past 200, but looking at ballistic calculators, and comparing it to a higher BC bullet in a 6BR the wind drift is way less for the 6br. Any suggestions, on what you'd use for this type of shooting at that yardage?

I dont see why a 6ppc or 30br wouldn't be top two.

At only 300 yards though I'd be playing with something that bucks the wind best for f class. Speed and BC... look at 6mm bullets and compare that to the 30BR selection you can play with. Just a quick look at berger bullets G1s shows BC wise your better off with a 6mm BC wise as the small 30 cal FB bullets have less BC (speaking for berger for this example). So theoretically the 105gr 6mm will buck wind better than a small 30 cal bullet.

Running with that... 6ppc, 6BR, 6GT, 6XC.

The BR would push a 105gr bullet better than a ppc. Might be able to grab alittle more velocity with a GT or XC.. but the BR is efficient and known for inherently accurate. So a BR wouldn't be a bad choice... if you want a tad more speed 6BR varients... BRA or Dasher.

Id settle for a 6BRA to gain a tad and meet in the middle with the advantage of less brass flow/trimming. After that it sounds to be more of a loading game as to who had the best load for the conditions for that day..

Anything listed above could win... the driver and the load of the day sounds like the bigger factor.

The tack driver shows the 6ppc is the most dominate at 300 yards. If you have a 30 br I’d just use that for now.

Personally I’d be shooting a 6br or 6bra as that’s what I have access too and they shoot well at 300 so for score it might do pretty good but as benchrest is concerned, as long as wind is consistent and low the ppc would out group and agg it for sure

I don't think you've had the pleasure of shooting the Tack Driver in Orangeburg. There is nothing consistent about the ever changing gusty winds. And that's on a good day. Accuracy rules at 300 yds.

The 6 ppc is definitely a good one for sure. But I believe the 6 br/bra is a really good one as well. The ppc out numbers the 6 br cases at the tack driver but there's always at least one in the top 5. In good conditions I'd say the ppc definitely has a advantage. Put some wind on it and Ill take a bra.

I am the same as you. Just found a very nice 300yd range close to where I am spending the winter. I have a 6xc and shoot 115gr .59 bc pointed dtacs at nearly 3000 fps. Seems like it would have an advantage over the smaller brothers for wind. I am shooting 1/3 to 1/2 moa casually - don't compete. But maybe that isn't good enough? Pics from yesterday. IMG_9762.jpeg

Wouldn’t it be nice to shoot like speedy? lol
That's beside the point. He brought what wins. You have to also realize that
the Tack Driver brings in the best of the best. And most of those bring a 6ppc
for that yardage. Now two time champion of Tack Driver series has been Bart
Sauter, and I do believe he shot both with the BRA. He out agged the score
component with it. Bottom line.....Even though Speedy won the group component,
Bart was further ahead in score. But we are talking a better group cartridge. Bart
Dang near had a third one. I like Speedy but would rather shoot like Bart.....LOL

Here's the Grand Agg and result......
