300 wsm or what?

so i have a 30 cal 1in12 twist tube thats not chambered yet . i have a 308 dont need another but ..... was thinking light grain bullets in a 300 wsm or many 30br ? ideas ?

If you still want to keep the barrel and do not want another 308, the 300WSM could be a viable alternative. You could shoot those 185Hybrids / Juggernauts at exceptional speed and do quite well at F-Open... I have no idea about a 30BR>>> I have never owned one nor do I know anyone who does>>>so I can't comment..

might be hard to find someone that wants to trade for something else dont you think ? if some wanted to trade something like a 6mm bore - 243 - 6.5 creedmoor - 6.5x55 would be awesome ...... it would be a target/long range varmint gun like hogs , coyotes

So Ben, do you have a 300 WSM? ;)

300 WSM and 185's would be good for midrange, but not long range. For long range you would have to push them so hard that you would burn up barrel quick and would risk bullet disintegration. Light bullets going fast have never been the best option for long range shooting.

Sell barrel and buy a 1:10" for a 300 WSM or 1:17" for a 30 BR.

Oh I understand what you are saying Erik... It appears like the OP wants to stick with the barrel he has, so I was just giving my opinion on what he COULD do with the limitations he has placed on himself, that's all... Now IF he wanted to go with a 1-10 (buy/sell/trade) he would be MILES ahead. However, if he is going to stick with what he has, he COULD manage to shoot long range>>maybe not the BEST option, but it could be done.. It would certainly out do ANY 308 at 1K yards, and some of those F-T/R boys do quite well with 185's and their .308's..

I own 2 300WSM's, one 1-10 and one 1-12 twist. The 1-12 twist will shoot 125-130 gr bullets very well and very fast. RL-17 is the powder to look at and I can tell you that I've run 125gr bullets at 3800 fps with excellent accuracy. With 130 gr Barnes TTSX it is a deer lightning bolt. Also shoots 155gr bullets super. I would shoot some really big critters with the 130gr load. Also as flat as you can get to about 400 yds.

Make it a 30-06 and I bet it would work pretty well with up to 165 grainers.Maybe I am wrong but if you have to push faster ackley improve it for alittle more velocity.

Not quite correct. A .300 WSM could reasonably push 185 Hybrids at ~3200 from 32". My 30" F-TR rifle shoots 230 Hybrids at ~2500. Those two loads have identical wind deflection at 1000 yards. Velocity is far less important than B.C.

Steve, he is not going to be shooting 230's with a 1 in 12 twist.... About the best he can hope for with his barrel is to move the 185's along as fast as he reasonably can... Unless he changes barrels.. My reply above was about the F-T/R guys who use 185's.... Comparing 185's with 185's, a WSM will out do any 308...

But you stated that "It would certainly out do ANY 308 at 1K yards" and that was what I was refuting, not what he could or could not shoot with a given barrel. If the OP wants to be competitive with a .300 WSM in F-Open at 1000, he should sell this barrel and find a 10" twist, straight Ø1.25" barrel at least 32" long. I do shoot .300 WSM and it can more than hold its own ballistically, but not with 185 grain bullets.

It would be nice to know the intentions of what the gun would be used for. I shoot 11 twists in my 300 WSM and have no problem with 210 VLD Bergers. I also had a 10 twist and couldn't hardly tell the difference at 1000 yards. Maybe the 10 had an advantage when the winds blew. If it is just for hunting he could just shoot lighter bullets. The 300 WSM is a real accurate caliber.

umm ... so it would shoot 190 ? that would be enough for what I'm doing . what other 30 calibers could i use with a 1in12

just wondering any one know anything about 7.5x55 .. seen a custom 7.5x55 it was a tack driver

It is an excellent cartridge. Back in the eighties, we made 7.5X55 brass from .284 Win. Expand the neck, run it into a 7.5 die, load and shoot. It is very close to a .30-.284. In a strong, modern action, it will produce velocities similar to a .30-'06.

If a 308 can push a 185 Juggernaut to almost 2800 fps, how fast can the 300WSM push them? Got a 270 WSM I have thought about converting as well.

A .300 WSM should be able to get ~3200 fps from 32" with a 185 Hybrid or LRBT (Juggernaut). That presumes using IMR 7828 SSC. Double base powders might get a little more.

Hey Steve, on the 300WSM for F Open, which bullet weight is doing better, 210,215, or 230gr? I assume the 230gr with 30-32" barrel around 2800fps?
