300 WSM or 300 PRC

I am going to build a long action rifle mainly to hunt with and maybe play around a little at 1000 yard F Class.

With the 300 WSM throated long for 210 and 215 bullets it seems I could possibly duplicate or get really close the ballistics of the PRC. Any thoughts on this? Hoping @ShootsDots chimes in on this. I know he has shot a lot of 300 WSM..

I don’t know if the 300 WSM will duplicate the speeds of a 300 PRC but the sweet spot for 215 gr Hybrid for me and what I have read by some other shooters seems to be around 2840 fps (28” Barrel). And it can be really sweet there!

I think you meant WM because they have the same bolt face? If so, I have really good luck with my Bugholes chambered prefit 300 WM. Origin LA, bartlein 3b fluted prefit barrel and grayboe stock. A lighter weight hunting rifle type of build with a really loud brake. I had originally subtracted .264 instead of .308 hence the crossouts. I ran out of 4831sc so I had to stop load development. Time to get that guy out again! The main reason I picked 300 WM over 300 PRC was ammo availability. I figured I could find 300 WM just about anywhere I would fly with it so.

Cold bore might = flyer lol.

My vote is to go 300 WSM but use a medium action. It is my favorite 30 Cal and currently supported by several brass manufacturers. If you need factory ammo the 300 PRC has more affordable options on the shelf. I have shot both at 600y and the PRC has much more recoil but it is a really accurate cartridge design.

Powder for the PRC has been difficult with the magnum powders being in short supply. That is changing though with H1000 and Retumbo coming back into inventory.

I hunt with my WSM and it never leaves me wanting more. The PRC has enough recoil you may still be hesitant when you go to pull the trigger on a big game hunt.

Either way you wont be disappointed just determine now if you ever want to shoot above 215g you should go PRC.

To be honest Im not sure you can build a hunting rifle that can also shoot f class. 20 round strings puts a lot of heat in a barrel and nothing you would consider for hunting could take it. Now as much as I love the wsm, its not a long range hunting cartridge. I have had a bunch of wsms as well as a prc. The drops and wind calls are much different at 1k. Thats not a problem for known distance target shooting but it is for hunting. Now, I feel like you dont have a choice but to go with the wsm, because a prc is not going to compete well at f-class, its just too big. We can wad up tiny groups with a 6mm at 1k too, but its not the best choice for everything.

Alex, I always use a varmint contour. So it may hold up. I know a dedicated rifle would be best but I would shoot it in F class just to see what I can do with it. No hopes or aspirations of winning. Just for fun. I don’t mind a gun being a little heavy. Elk are more heavier. Lol.

WSM - 1000 YD in a match setting ! Can one say more ?

What bullet and powder.? I have H4350 and H4831SC on hand.

Even a heavy varmint will get really hot, and a rem varmint would probably burn you after 22 rounds. Defiantly go wsm then, H4350 and 215s or 210s are pretty much the old standard. In a hunting length barrel, you will just get them to 2800 or so. But for hunting, the wsm is a much better fit with the 180-190 class of bullet out to 600 or so.

I built a WSM on an XM action this year and throated it for the Fed Terminal Ascent 175gr, which required the longest throat out of 4 dummy rounds with 4 different bullets seated with the bearing diameter just ahead of the neck shoulder junction. The throat was out there but the OAL was still plenty shy of the 3.250 OAL of the internal box magazine. It shot extremely well and that action was perfect for that chambering. The other bullets were 180-190 class Berger’s, ELD-X, etc…. Match made in heaven IMO.

When I was still young enough to carry a rifle on tough mountain hunts a .300 wsm was light, handy, and deadly using premium 180gr bullets and limiting the range to 350 or less. Used a Leupold 2-8x. Overall weight not much over 8#.

I'm a PRC fan for both. When we, Hornady and I started talking about a replacement for the BooBoo case (8X68) we all agreed the then, HSM, was just a bit big for accuracy work. But my heavy gun is chambered in it and shoots 225's really well. My hunting rifle shoots 212's with 72. Grs. of 4831SC loafing along. With that said if the primary purpose is hunting go with the WSM and 180-200 gr. bullets.

What twist barrel with the 225 grainers. Same load for accuracy using H 4831 also?
