300 WSM Build Question on Barrel

Guys,
I am in the process of putting together a 300 WSM for some local club shoots 200-600 yards.

Weight is not a concern.
Barrel will be 30'' long + a break

Question is what contour barrel would you chose? My two choices are a 1.25 straight or a 1.25 ending at .930 at the muzzle?

How much extra heat would the 1.25 straight contour soak up?

It is going on a Savage target action in a Mcmillan MBR stock, would there be any advantage to use a barrel block?

Thanks,
Dallas

one of the guys over here has a savage target action with a 1.25 30" straight barrel.

he has it fixed in a mid mounted barrel block about 4" long. the block is situated at the balance point of the action/scope and barrel.

it really shoots! shot 100-8 at 900yds and won the range at our state championships.

the straight barrel is easyer to make a block for and also easyer when you rechamber if you use a split block. i dont know if id like to hang a barrel that size off a savage action but depends what your gunsmith recomends.

I would only use the barrel block if I go with the heavy 1.25 straight barrel.

What contour and length are most people using on their 30 caliber 1000 yard guns?

Thanks,
Dallas

When you are shooting a high velocity 30 caliber gun WEIGHT is your friend. Go with the 1.25" straight.

It should be more stable on the bags also. Personally, I would leave the muzzle break off - it is not legal for NRA rifle matches, even though you may not be thinking about them now.......

Merry Christmas,
George
