.300 Winchester Magnum with 230 grain Berger Match Target Hybrid in 1-10" or 1-9" Twist?

Gentlemen,
Do you need a 1-9" twist to shoot a 230 grain Berger Match Target Hybrid efficiently out of the .300 Winchester Magnum at Sea Level? Barrel length will be between 24-26" and a suppressor is to be used more often than not... I am going to be in for two Bartlein 5R blanks and having Dave Tooling thread and chamber them for my AI AXMC, however, the question of 1-10", which is familiar, or 1-9" which is a special order seems up in the air. As Mr. Tooley said we have shooters using the 240 grain SMKs in the .300 WM at Sea Level with a 1-10" twist why would you need 1-9" to shoot the 190 Berger? He told me to run the numbers, however, it is quite frankly beyond my depth. I would greatly appreciate your help... This is not an insignificant investment in these two barrels and I don't want to find I've under twisted my tubes for the 230s. That said I also don't want to have a problem shooting my fire forming match loads, which are 190 gain SMKs, and which I also have in bulk. Your input would be greatly appreciated...

I don't know of anybody shooting the 230 Berger in 1000 Yard BR. Most are shooting the 200 Hybrid and 210VLD. A few have played with the 215. These will all shoot good in a 10. Matt

I personally feel you need a 1-9 twist. I tried them in my 1-10 and one day they shoot lights out next day they shoot like a shotgun. I went to the OTM and they were more stable. Play it safe and go with the 1-9 if all you want to shoot are the big heavies.

Don't know about sea level, but my 10 twist Brux did quite well with the 230 hybrid at 1440 and 1880yds at around 3000ft on a trip a while back. Haven't noticed any problems at home which is 1500ft, but I can't shoot past 550yds here.

i had a 9" twist hart barrel and could not get 240 sierras to shoot. I think the 10" twist would be a better choice

The 240 Sierra is a very long bullet. It needs a lot of freebore to get it out the junction. It also seemed to like it in the lands hard, in all my guns. If you got a good lot (which they varied from lot to lot) and got them working, they really wanted to shoot small. Sometimes they were a little fussy to what they wanted. You really needed to measure and sort them. The diameters had to be measured because they really varied. With the long bearing surface, this would really show up at 1000 yards. Matt

10 twist will shoot them great. Message member Warren Dean on here. He shoots the crap out of that combo

Gentlemen,
I would like to thank everyone for their input.. I'm still in the research phase. Berger says 1-9" required and this load was designed by Bryan Litz so I am hesitant to go against that advice. I may see if I can talk to him after SHOT... Much obliged, Matt.

230 and a shorter than 28" barrel if you want to shoot them out long I would stay with a 9 twist. if you are going to stay inside of 600-700 yards the 10 twist is fine.

I'm taking Bryan's advice with my current ELR build.

I'm planning to use Berger 215 & 230 Hybrids in my new 300WM so I ordered a 32" 1:9 30cal Bartlein just last week from bullets.com (Shiraz). It was in stock and arrived in just a few days. It'll be finished at 28", screwed onto a Templar V2 action and mounted into an AT AICS.

I'm building this rifle specifically for the 1200 and 1900 yard farmland that I've recently gained access to. Gonna have some fun this fall!

I had one of my 1-10 300 WSM tubes with about 1000 rounds through it on my HG set back and rechambered it with my long throat 300 WBY reamer. It shot AMAZING with the 230's!! But, I quit the sport (for now), so it never saw a match!! If I ever start back up again, this is the tube I will put on my HG!!!
