.300 Winchester Magnum............help please

Well, I decided on the .300 Win mag. This gun will be primary a hunting rifle. Rifle has a 1-11 twist. Kinda rare ,. I guess a "classic" hunting twist. Gun will be used for Nilgai/Elk.

What bullet weights/Brands will work best with the 1-11 twist. I don't have the rifle yet, it is in transit. So, I haven't been able to measure to the lands for OAL.

I need a "hunting" bullet

I need a "Match" bullet

I have

RL-26
H-4350
H-1000
H4831ssc
IMR 7828ssc
H-4350
Retumbo
RL-22
N-560

180 gr Nosler accubond behind 78 - 81 H-1000. hunting
190 Sierra Match King. 70-72gr RL-22 match.
My McMillan match rifle, shot 72 grs of RL-22 behind a 190 SMK with a Fed 210M primer in hot weather.
Made High Master with it Long Range Sling.
Now my hunting rifle likes 80.0 of H-1000 behind a 180 Accubond. Kills Elk!

I second that partition bullet. Look at the 195gr Match and MAYBE Berger's 200. Altitude can play a pool with bullets being marginally stabilized. JMO

For a match bullet you don't get much more classic than the Berger 210 VLD over H1000, if you're at least at 1000 ft of elevation you should have no problem stabilizing.

My rifle is a Sako 75, which is an 11 twist too. I’ve had very good luck with H1000 and RL25 and the 210 Berger hunting vld. Shoots bugholes kills like lightning. RL25 is my favorite of these two. I’ve shot this load to 600 yds with no problems...
There’s your hunting and match bullet.

I have been hunting with 300WM since 1995 and reloading for it since then as well. You should not have any issues with any hunting design bullet from 150gr to 220gr with 1:11 twist. VLD bullets are all over the map with one barrel liking one and another barrel hating it.

Sweet Spot for 300WM hunting is 180gr to 220gr depending on the design. Anything lighter than 180gr. and you might as well be using a 30-06, 308 Win. or smaller. Baring caliper restrictions for short range lethality a 220gr. round nose soft point from a 300WM is deadlier than a lot of larger caliper bullets with a lot more powder behind them.

Now all of that said I understand you said this is your only or main hunting rifle. When I got my first 300WM rifle I purchased everything from 150gr. on up from many different brands. I purchased 300 Barnes solid copper 150gr. bullets as long as you are shooting thin skinned game like Elk and smaller and you are not trying to shoot at extreme distances these are fantastic. I was only 22 years at the time so I was trying everything.

Match bullets 185gr. 212gr are almost sure thing.
