300 Win Mag vs. .308 recoil?

So I got the rifle in finally, seems like it took forever compared to my other buying experiences. But I digress...

I can't remember if I said what it was. It's a Remington 700 mil spec SS 5-R 24" barrel. I measured the muzzle just behind the threads and the barrel is .83" in diameter. Is that a standard Remington Heavy Varmint or another configuration?

Thanks,

I've never shot a belted magnum cartridge before. And, I'd prefer being prepared because of the 3 fused vertebra in my neck. Just sayin. ;D

If one is worried about recoil of a specific caliber...it would probably be best to select a lesser caliber which most likely would not be a handicap if accuracy is the object.

From the nice folks on this forum I've gotten good advice regarding recoil so I will be getting a muzzle brake and have already gotten a good recoil pad for the stock. I'll be fine with it I'm sure.

VAIS muzzle brake (I feel like I'm their main form of advertising on forums :) they are that good. Not because they reduce recoil (most brake work great) but because they are the only brake that doesn't increase sound volume! I had one on a Ruger Laminate Compact (5.5lb 308) which was not pleasant after 15 shots. After the brake, it shot like a 223. VAIS is awesome :) Plus the other people near you will thank you for it, in fact they probably won't even notice you have a brake. (unlike my recent experience at the range with someone and their 7mm Weatherby Magnum with a brake - crazy blast/sound anywhere near it).

No problem. They cost a bit more (but you American's get everything cheaper than the rest of us :) Ohh Canada :( Seriously though, all brakes work pretty good but you won't believe the sound difference. Shoot the rifle a little without the brake, then see the difference after. You won't believe it's still the same rifle :)

Yeah, that would be the one problem. The only option would be to make sure there is something dirt free under the brake (like a shooting mat, tarp, old blanket etc.). As long as there isn't dust/dirt to be kicked up, shouldn't be a problem. Give them a call, not sure if they can make it with the lower part hole free (but this I'm assuming would change the noise characteristics?). The only other brake I've been impressed with was whatever Savage is using on their 110BA 338 Lapua. It wasn't as painfully loud as I was expecting either (type of loudness, more deep instead of shrill - didn't bother the ears that much) but might have just been on that specific caliber/rifle?

Go to the Law Enforcement Series, 10/110BA. It's the 110BA 338 Lapua. I don't think they say what the brake is though?
