My guess would be drill Marks possibly some kind of machine Marks I doubt it is a crack but anything is possibleI have a Remington 700 R5 Gen 2 300 win mag. I have around 400 rounds through it. View attachment 1247157View attachment 1247158 I ran a bore scope in it today and found what looks like a crack all the way around the inside of the bore about 7" in from the muzzle.
Have any of you guys seen anything like this? what is it?
What??? No way??? That's crazy. Yeah mine is very accurate as well. great shooter!Twins! 700 5R, .308, and about the same distance from the muzzle.
My gun is amazingly accurate.

Judging by that group somebody should figure out how to add the crack feature to barrelsMy last 3 round group at 100 yards...
Yeah right!!!! I’m more lucky than good but this rifle is sub MOA at 100 yards consistently! It’s a shooter for sure!!Judging by that group somebody should figure out how to add the crack feature to barrels
A borescope it’s just one piece of the puzzle it should be used to diagnose a problem if you do not have a problem don’t be too concerned about it let the target dictate if you have a problem in the first placeI’m not very comfortable with that mark or crack or whatever it is in the bore. Don’t know if it was always there or not. Today was the first time I ever scoped the bore.
As long as the rifle holds good groups I guess it’s no big deal deal. Maybe I should have never scoped the bore!!!
Aren't Remington barrels hammer forged? Maybe that was a flaw on the mandrel around which the blank was hammered to form the rifling? Just a thought.A true crack would be so small you need to magnaflux or xray to see it. One that big would have caused bigger problems by now.
Looks like machining marks from the rifling or drilling process. Or the hammer forging if that was used.
I checked the outside of the barrel closely and found no indications of a defect. This is one of those things that were it my rifle barrel I would likely wish I had not found it, mainly due to the psychological "trauma". LOL. The rifle obviously shoots. It's probably a machining mark of some sort rather than a crack. Unfortunately, you can't "unsee" it, now that you know it's there. I'd suggest a few things. First, just for safety's sake, inspect the exterior of the barrel very carefully in that exact region. You can estimate pretty closely where it is located using the shaft of the borescope as a sort of ruler. Assuming the inspection doesn't show anything irregular, try not to let it bother you mentally when shooting. Finally, I'd check that region of the bore regularly after cleaning to make sure the irregularity wasn't picking up any carbon/dirt/copper/patch fibers/etc. or causing excessive coppering closer to the muzzle.
