300 Whisper Vs. 357 mag

What would the real advantage of a 300 Whisper have over a .357 mag, both having 24" barrels)? The object of the rifle would be subsonic shooting as well as some small deer shooting. Could the .357 not be loaded for subsonic velocities with similar energy to the 300 Whisper? Accuracy???

The principle behind the whisper is that high BC heavy for caliber projectiles lose very little energy when launched subsonic. I am not sure that you can find any 357 bullets that have a BC bordering on .65, but if you can, it should work very well.

Sooner -

You won't find any realy high BC .35 cal bullets.
I fyouwere to go w/ .35 cal bullets of 225-250gr, your BC would be the best possible; but bullet choice woule be ltd.

If you were to shoot a stock .357Mag, Marlin .357Mag 1894SC )
your barrel length would be around 18.5".

A stock H & R SB2 Ultra-Rifle in .357Mag would have a 22" bbl

A better choice would be and H & R in .357Max, however these have extremely long throats for their twist rate.

You did not say the range you had in mind for dead deer, however
your case choises would seem to indidcate you have ranges of less than 150yd in-mind.

What really, really makes sense is: a Marlin 336XLR in .35 Rem
These have a 24" barrel, and are stainless.

Hornady's new proprietary LeveRevoluton .35 Rem ammo features a 200gr .35 cal bullet w/ a synthetic; cushy Spitzer tip.

If you plot bullet weights and case capacites of hyper accurate
rifle/cartridfe combos, increasing in bore diams an bullet weights from the PPCs on up; you'd find that for a 150gr .35cal bullet..... the .35 Rem has ideal case capacity. Certainly. .35 Rem 200gr cartridges are typically loaded to muzzle energies that rival .300 Whisper, aerodynamics of each bullet not withstanding.

For a custom gun, .357Auto Mag should be considered.
Cases can easily be made from excellent Lapua or Norma 6BR brass

.357 Auto Mag is a step in case capacity beyond the .357Max.
* I had J.D Jones chamber me a carbine .35 barrel of 22" lg
in .357 AutoMag. JD wanted me to go shorter, on the order of an 18 or 20" lg barrel. He felt the extra 2" in barrel length that I had specified; would actually reduce potential bullet velocity; via friction drag effects on the bullet in the bore.

Again, the .357 AutoMag can rival or eclipse some potential
.300Whisper loads. And as stated previous, a 22- 24" barrel isn't even warranted. Mine shot best w/ , of all things )
plain-Jane surplus Rem .35 cal 1150gr PSPs !!!

The .357AutoMag carbine I had, 22" Red Scherer .35 cal 1-16
5-groove #7 ) shot superbly; out to 300yd.
Barrel was mounted on my Wichita WBR1375 SS bench rest action.

I have since rmeoved the barrel, and re-barreled the action w/ a new 6mm widlcat of my own design.

My low-use .357Auto Mag take-off barrel and associated .357AutoMag die sets, Horandy case forming, neck-size, and bullet seating dies ) are all for sale.

If you are not above casting your own .35Cal bullets,
NEI Tools has some excellent .35 Cal aero-design bullet molds

Best of luck in yuor endeavors,

Regards,
KJW

Would that 357 automag be the same as a ' 358 BR' ???

There is a 338 Whisper version, on the 7BR case, always thought a 35 cal would be neat for pistol bullet plinking option for low cost.

I found a spec sheets on both, they are different, looks like BR case would be larger capacity, but similar round.

65BR -

For all intents and and purposes....
.357Auto Mag effectively IS the equivalent of a ".35BR ".

I formed my brass out of both 6BR and 7BR brass, and had the SR primer pocket to boot.

.357Auto Mag originally was formed off .308 Win, when it was first invented.

The big difference between .357Auto Mag and most cases of the "BR" ilk, is that it's base-to-shoulder dimension is
a bit shorter. I'd have to re-check, but perhaps case oal
is also a tad different.

One can't / shouldn't expect BR brass to serve every shooting purpose known to man. Still, even in a .35 calibre guise; it made for an accurate round out to 300yd
, w/ .35 cal Rem 150PSPs )

I still have my .357Auto Mag take-off barrel, case form dies and relaoding dies for sale.

Best of luck in your endeavors.

Regards,
357Mag
