300 weatherby

finally got one . It is the Vangaurd , one of the ones made before the MOA ones . Haven't got any glass on it yet , but will by the weekend . Anyone here have one of these ? How well does yours shoot ? Thanks , Kenneth

The Vanguard is made by Howa for Weatherby - been that way for quite some time. It's mechanically identical to the Howa 1500, which is great news. I'm very fond of the action and if the factory barrel isn't up to your expectations, spin a good pre-fit or full custom barrel on it - you'll be smiling.

I have a Vanguard in .300 WSM that I've fiddled with only modestly. I put a Timney trigger on it and dropped the barreled action into a Hogue stock. It's a dandy hunting rifle that's easy to carry, packs plenty of wallop and will reliably put three into .750" to 1.00" at 100 yards from a bipod or a field rest. I'll put a better tube on it after I feed it a few hundred more rounds.

If your Vanguard is pre-Hogue (the newer ones sport Hogue stocks from the factory), I highly recommend getting a Hogue stock for it. The older hard polymer stocks are uncomfortable with chamberings much milder than the .300 Weatherby.

Enjoy your new rifle!

Thank you , it does have the hard stock and did concern me the barrel was tight to the barrel channel .
As to whether that will be an issue or not , I guess I won't know till I get some glass on it this weekend .
Pretty excited about trying it out . Don't know what the heck I need it for , but you know how it goes with a fellow and his wants .

I don't have experience with a vanguard in 300, but my two older brothers have a 243 vanguard, and the other has a 300 accumark. The vanguard is at least 30 years old (he got it as an incentive prize at work, who does that anymore?) It has a beautiful wood stock, and he and I have both put 3 shots touching at 100. Accurate enough I'd say. As for the 300 wby, from my other brother's accumark, I would not want to be the bull elk in my brother's crosshairs at any distance. That shell would stop a truck.

A friend got a Vanguard in 30'06 and it shoots very well. With the right ammo it shoots 1/2 to 3/4 moa.

I'm sure the 300 Weatherby in such a light rifle will kick like angry mule so be ready and hold her hard.

I had one that was sub moa. Weatherby has a huge freebore so you can't seat anywhere near the rifling. The old 300s had a 12 twist. Hopefully yours is a 10 for the long heavy bullets which are very efficient with that large case.

It should be accurate, if you don't blink. I bought a new Vanguard in 300 Weatherby with the plastic stock back in 1999 when they came with the 26" barrel. It kicked like a beast. Ouch.

Good luck!

image.jpg Well this could be a blind dog finding a bone , or maybe it's going to be a sweet heart .
Got home , not much time left , and I lost my mind a bought a box of Weatherby plus 180 gr partition , ouch ! The price .
The rifle had a Simmons Atec on it when I bought it , I had no intentions of shooting it till I got some good glass on it , but just had to try it . Shot it at twenty five yds to see if it was on paper ,it was and moved back to 100 yds . Three shots , first two , almost in the same hole , third almost touching them .
Will play some more tomorrow . Recoil was stiff , but not intolerable . Will also get one of my leupolds on it when I get set up to hand load , not going to use this expensive stuff to zero a new scope .
Hope to have a repeat of this , what did hurt was pattering a new choke I bought for my 10 gauge BPS. Was in the setting position with neck at an awkward position , that three and half inch double 00 buck hurt my neck .

my buddy got one and we put on a new stock and new trigger and then a muzzle break and now his 12 year old son can shoot it. this gun loves 185gr classic hunter bergers with imr- 4831.

Thanks , I had just asked a fellow about the Bergers . Also asked him if he had seen my dog ? No bone today , rifle opened up to 1 1/2" -2 1/2" three shot groups . Have had this experience before using factory ammo , but generally not this extreme . Also had my 03-A3 , BAR , and 444 out shooting in between groups with the Weatherby to let the barrel cool between groups and was shooting some good groups with them , so that let me know I wasn't flinching .
Got a trigger and dies on the way and will wait till I get the Trigger and Luepold on it before shooting anymore .
Thanks to all , Kenneth

I think that Simmons got scared after three rounds. You're not flinching - the scope is . . .
