300 Weatherby

Hi everyone,,,
I just won a NRA Weatherby Mark V in 300Wby & I'm looking for any & all reloading tips for this particular gun & caliber.
I've only been reloading for a few months & I will be deer & hog hunting with it.
I would like to load it with the same Hornady 178 A-Maxs that I load for my .308 as I figure the light bullet will help to lessen the recoil.
Please let me know what you think as I know ya'll have much more experience with this than I do.
Thx

I just walked in from the range after a session with my 300 Wby on the bench. Invest in a muzzle brake to tame the recoil and you will be much happier with the rifle. My gun dates back and has a KDF muzzle brake that makes the gun a pleasure to shoot. I just put a 10 200gr. Game kings @ 2900 fps. down range and am none the worse for wear. The gun weighs 8.5 lbs. and would be punishing with that load without the brake.

Thx Hopkins
I'll keep that in mind
I really do not want to alter the gun if I can help it & I'm still scrapeing to finance a scope

I have a 300wby with a 30" barrel and I load the 190 gr smk for hunting with h870 powder getting 3200 fps. This gun was smithed by Howard Wolfe a very fine gentleman and gunsmith. I would like to know if he is still liveing?

Howard died earlier this year. He was a gentleman and a great gunsmith with a lot of knowledge of long range precision shooting. He was a great shooter and was one of our past presidents of the Williamsport Pa 1000 Yard Benchrest Club in the 80s. He perfected the 30-378 Wolfe (shortened version of the 378 case necked down to 30) which he and others used in competition. He also shot regular benchrest in the 50s at DuBois, Pa and other places. He made fine actions and was a die-hard fan of the Unertl scopes.

Its a belted magnum case and it seems the case can develop a bulge just ahead of the belt which a fls die doesn't quite get to. It seems Larry Willis makes a collet die for sizing just this part of the case and may be worth checking out if you plan to reload. I just ordered one from him for a "back to the future" 300WM project I am working on. http://www.larrywillis.com/

I found this review with pictures and explanation of how it works and what it does, interesting read and novel design!
