300 weatherby

Hello all. Just like to start off by saying what a great website. We're fortunate to have all of this information available to us newbies.
Anyway, wanting to get started in some long range shooting. I do a little hunting and would like to extend my range a bit. Not sure if I will try to compete yet. It sounds interesting, but sooooo much to learn.
So my question is this: I'm going to buy a Remington 700 SPS in 300 Weatherby. I have wanted a good gun in this caliber for a long time now, so if I want to compete I will need to get another gun, which is fine. On to the question, what kind of real world accuracy can I expect from this setup? I have a range on our farm out to 600 yards. What kind of groups can I expect at this distance and would I be able to go out to 1000 yards with practice? I consider myself a good shooter, which of course holds the most bearing on accuracy. The scope will be a Leupold VXIII unless you folks have a better idea for me. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Dougestyle,

Thanks for posting and welcome to 6br.com.

The 300 Weatherby Magnum is an impressive cartridge that has been used all over the world for very large or dangerous game. Even elephants have been downed with one shot from this cartridge.

Any caliber that will throw a 200 grain bullet at 3000 FPS in a hunting weight rifle, is going to be brutal on recoil.

Getting good match grade brass for a 300WM might be a problem.

If you want something that 300 Weatherby class, if it were me,I would choose a 300 Win Mag or 338 Laupa Magnum....At least you can get Laupa brass for those two calibers if you choose to reload.

I really don't know what type of accuracy, you can expect with the 300 Weatherby....Most target shooters,600-1000 yard) are shooting a .223,6BR, Dasher,BRX, 6.5 x 284, .308. There is a new cartridge out, a 6.5 x 47 that is being necked down to 6mm that has shown great promise, in both sizes the 6.5 and 6mm.

Please keep us posted on your progress....

Lynn, is the product that you are talking about: http://www.kenfarrell.com/REM-7L-1-20.html

Also, do you think the .300 RUM would be just as good a choice, as I do not know if I can get a 700 SPS in the weatherby caliber. I have looked and it seems that I can load the RUM down to the weatherby max loads, although I have read where reloads are more accurate at just under maximum. Any thoughts? Thanks.

My advice is to find a used Remington 700 long action rifle (in good shape) Carbon or Stainless Steel. Then contact Hart Barrels and ask about the stainless compitition contour barrel, it is the barrel of choice because of the controlled barrel whip. If you reload consider a longer barrel, mine is 38" plus a 4" break. Please review what you will be using the gun for and what you are expecting to get out of it. Hart technical assistance and a good gunsmith can answer your questions. My advice in short is taking your time and do your research.

It took me two years and a lot of $$$ to get what I was looking for and where ever I go someone asks to buy it.
