300 Weatherby Ackley Imp.

Anyone have experience with this round ? Interested especially in reloading die options. Also any advice on brass preference. Rifle will be used for long range targets and long range whitetails.

Hmm! What bullet you planned on using? I have an Accumark Mk-V I use for hunting. The 180 grain Barnes TSX I use is already at 3400 fps screaming velocity. If that's not enough why not step up to 30-378 if you want the Weatherby round.

Weatherby brass are made by Norma and very pricey. I think you're better served with 300 RUM.

A Weatherby cartridge design that has otherwise been modified to aleviate the venturi shoulder.....is no longer a "Weatherby"..........IMHO

Round is commonly called a 300 Ack. I used the Weatherby name in my post to distinguish it from the 300 Win. AI. The bullet I plan to use is a 210gr Berger. Cartridge is a proven performer in 1000yd. benchrest .

Take a look at the 308 Baer, about 11% more capacity w/ a 35 degree shoulder. Just neck down 340 Wby brass, then neck turn of course and fireform; or load up 300 Wby case and fireform. One of the most accurate big 30's ever. It loves the 210 Sierras and Bergers.

there's also the .300 Jarrett. Nothing but an 8mm mag case necked down to 30 caliber with a 35 degree shoulder. The .300 WBY computes out to about a 45 degree shoulder (roughly), but with a really nice neck length. You can buy a no free bore reamer from Kiff and some others. I think you'd be ahead of the game starting out with a known quantity, plus dies are common. Ackley did three different .300 mags. Two are shorter, and the one most known is a Weatherby clone with sharp shoulders, and he states to use .300 WBY mag load data. Plus the 40 degree shoulder is well know for doughnuts, as many of us have learned in the past. But you don't get it nearly as bad with a 30 degree shoulder angle or the double radius shoulder either.

I have two 30 Harts ... a sporter and a heavy barrel I use for hunting. Its right in the middle between the 300 Weatherby and the 300 RUM...most accurate guns I own. This was an original developed by Hart of PA for 1000 yd br. Its super easy to load for. My goto is 200 grain Accubonds at 3170 fps. Just fireform with 300 Weatherby brass and go. It has a 300 winchester neck length...that's the diff with the rest a little more capacity.

I have a Barrel chambered in .300 Ackley. L. Baity did the chamber and the F/L Sizer came from him. It is a RCBS. The tag on the Die box reads .300 H&H Improved (Which is what the Weatherby, Baer, Hart and Ackley are). If you are going to get your reamer from PT&G, get Dave Kiff to send you the Reamer Print. PT&G make the reamers that most of the Die manufacturers use. Send the print to RCBS and they should be able to match it to a F/L die.
Option 2 would be to send the Reamer Print to Neil Jones and have him make you a die! I have a couple of other barrels that are chambered with my .300 Atlas reamer (also a .300 H&H improved). Jones made my die.
Brass most BR shooters use for the Ackley is Norma .300 Weatherby case.
I’ll let you in on a secret. When you order your Reamer, also order a .217” Belted Go-gauge! The standard magnum go-gauge is .220”. The Norma .300 Wby belt is at .215”.
Case forming is done with 14.0 grains of Unique and Cream of Wheat.
78.0 – 81.5 grains of Reloader 25 with the 210 VLD. The accuracy node is around 3,050 fps…
