.300 ultra mag

I am going to be re-barreling my .300 ultra mag here soon and I was wonderinf what twist i should get. I shoot 210gr SMK's with the factory 1-10" twist and it shoots very very nice! I was wondering if im going to be spending the money on a new barrel shoul di change the twist or leave it alone? I mean in a 5 shot group i have 3 touching and the other 2x toughing each other slightly high. I think that the 1-10" twist works very well but I wnated an outsiders opinion. thanks again for all of the info.

I've shot somewhere near 15,000 rounds of 300 ULTRA stuff.From 125gr BT's to 240gr MK's from 9twist to 12 twist...The best I have found is the 11 twist..The 125's do start to come apart around 4200fps though.:p:D

Heh right on!!! That's quite a bit loL!!!! I won't be shooting anything but 210's throught it. Now my nest question is what kind of barrel? I have kinda looked at a Krieger barrel. Now this may be a stupid question but im looking in my midway catalog right now and I see barrel blanks which i assume would be no specific caliber/ rifling in it. Now I see a list of ones that are for .30cal and such with options of different twist rates.
Now if I get one that is cut to .30cal with a 1-10twist i need to tell them its going on a Remington 700 chambered for a .300 Ultra mag correct? Sorry if this is confusing but i'm trying to build my first rifle and I dont really know all of the technical information lol. I want a heavy barrel with a 1" OD. I would like to have it roughly 28" or so. All of the help would be most appreciated!!!!

What kind of barrel contour should I get? I want a heavy varmint barrel. I would like it to be at least 1" OD at the muzzle. Also what kind of barrel? What brands have been good to you guys? i have never rebarreled anything. Thanks for all of the information!

The best advice I can give you is take your gun to a "GOOD" gunsmith tell them what you want. And they can take it from there...I shoot Broughton barrels'Period.....

Cool cool thxs for the advise. I have talked to my gunsmith and he said we could do this 1 of 2 ways. I could either order the barrel and the stock and give him the rifle and he could take over from there or i could just give it to him in the begining and he could take care of all of it. I think I might just give him the rifle and let him take care of it so I know everything is perfect! Heh thanks again.

I shoot Shilen barrels. Shilen has a #8 contour barrel that is 1.0000" at the muzzle and 1.2000" at the chamber end. Shilen select match grade barrels are hand lapped to + or - 0.0001". For more info go to....http://www.shilen.com/;)

I think for 210 grain bullets you will do best with 1 in 10 twist, maybe even 1 in 9) for this caliber.

Put a 30 in.Hart Straight 1.350 add a 8 or 10 in. barrel block a brake,IF you like loud noises) and shoot away

A 9twist is not needed with a 300 RUM case...Even the 240MK's shoot well with a 10 twist...I have shot them from 11 twists. And they shot well. However,I can at will blow up 200 and 210 class bullets with a 9twist.For the 210 class bullets stay with a 11 twist...If you plan on shooting 240's go with a 10twist

Cool thanks for all of your information guys! i will have to check out the Hart barrel and the Shilen barrel. Thanks again. My next question is: is there anway I can get a Mcmillian A5 stock faster than 4-5 months? my gunsmith told me that it would take that long b4 I would recieve it. Is this information true or not? thanks again!
-Cody

This is correct it will take 4 to 5 months if you order it threw McMillan because each stock is custom made. You can go to www.midwayusa.com and order a semi inleted stock and get it in 3 to 5 days.;)

Ok so if I went through Midway usa and got a semi-inletted 1 my gunsmith would still have to "work" it to get it perfect correct? Also I have a question about adding a box magazine feed system on my .300 Ultra. I would kind of like to add one of these units but I want to make sure that the COAL of my handloads that it likes will cycle through it. I have my 210 SMK's set out to 3.8" COAL. Now does ne 1 know if that load will cycle through the magazine syaytem? Thanks again for the information.

Yes, you are correct. Your gunsmith would have to use hand tools or a mill to completely inlet the stock to your specific action. Than the stock would have to be pillar beaded for optimum accuracy. I do not have the answer to your other question though.

Ok well I just checked out Midaway and they state that there is a minimum 90+ day wait for the stock- even semi-inletted. So basically it doesnt really matter if I go through Mcmillian or Midaway lol.

oh, lol but I ordered a shilen barrel from them and it seas that it was 90 + days but it came in 2 weeks. It is up to you good luck.

Are you set on a Mcmillan stock ?If not try a Shehane ST1000 L it's a laminated wood, heavier) but it has a longer forend.Or do you want the Tactical style A-3-5 Mac?

Joel Russo makes a laminated stock thats a clone to the A5 and the A3 as well as other great desgines, they require very little work comapired to others I've gotten to get them finished out and if you give him a call to discuss your build you will see what a big help he can be in helping with what you need.
here is a pic of my 260 with A5 laminated Brown/brown with Terry Cross adjustable comb.

I'm planning to build a big 30 cal and currently leaning toward the 30-338 Lapua improved,I got a 32" barrel with a 1-9 twist to shoot the 240's,not needed) and hopefully some heavier 250+ grain bullets from Richard Graves.

I do like the idea of the 300 Ultra though as it allos factroy ammo
