.300 savage or .250-3000 savage.

Hi everyone!

First time on this forum. I need Idea about making a match/varmint rifle or a good walking varminter rifle with one of my oldies. The gun are a Mauser 96 small ring in 6.5x55mm Mauser. I know the lock time compare to Remington, savage or even winchester are ten time longer but it shoot pretty well with lapua 139gr bullets. It make a clover leaf at 200 yards ( under an inch ) but now the barrel are on the dark side of his live and i want to give this rifle a new live. I know too it was made for low pressure cartridge; under 45000 cup so there are my ideas.

First make it a .300 savage with a 1-15 to 1-18 barrel and shooting 125gr bullets or less at .30BR speed, it should make groups as tight as .30BR, same bullet, same speed, same barrel. (I know the lock time).

Second make it a .250-3000 savage with a 1-10 twist, shooting VLD 117 grains to compare with the " Peppermint .25 BR rifle" in speed and accuracy. Will be a good medicine with 87gr bullet on hog and coyote.

Third make it a 7mm Rem. BR and shoot the same 168gr as my 7mm Remington magnum, match savage rifle at 2200fps with a rainbow trajectory but enough to make a good match at 300 yards. Can use 100gr bullet with a tight trajectory for hog and coyote.

If any of you have good ideas I'm open to try them. I have the time to work on this project. I made a lot of rifle before but this time i had no idea...

Thank

Francis

Welcome to the forum, what is wrong with the swede just the way it is. You would be wiser buying a savage rifle or reciever and building one from parts through northland shooters supply. This fella sells new prechambered barrels real right and you can get an sss trigger and a stock at stockys for less than rebarreling your mauser. You will have a modern strong reciever instead of the 96 mauser which has many limitations. You should look into what I suggest, just call jim at 1-763-682-4296 and pick his brain. You will likely have to leave a message but he will get back to you.

Seriously, I would look at a new 6.5 x 55 barrel or a 257 Roberts or a 7 x57. You need to hang in that 45 K pressure range and all of these will do it with good accuracy. Sub inch with that rifle at 200 is telling me that I really don't think that barrel is gone.

One of my biggest concern is that I'm living in Canada so i can't buy anything from our southern neighbor. I had a some modern rifle ( savage 99, 110, 10, 116, ruger M-77 and Winchester 70 in WSSM caliber ) but i need to buy a complete rifle or at least a used one to do the job. Maybe a cheap Steven 200 with the great savage 110 clone action but without the accutrigger. On the other side, i love to convert military rifle, i had a P-17 in .338 Winchester magnum, I have a P-17 in .338 lapua magnum and a P-14 in .510-460Wby magnum. This one are particularly heavy, 17lbs, but shooting 647gr ball at 2500fps with no brake, what a wallop.... My favorite load on these rifle are 500 grain solid at 2800fps and believe it or not i used it to hunt whitetail deer (don't kill anything whit it yet but maybe someday) with a 762gr gas check soft lead bullet grease with lubaloy, at a mere 1200fps. Use 47 grain of SR4759, fun to shoot, recoil like a 12 gauge slug... I convert a martini-enfield hinge falling block originally in .303 British in .416-405 winchester with an octagon's barrel, like it with open sight. Drive a 300gr solid or soft nose at 2400-2500fps. Why use .416 bullet on a 405? The availability of 250-450 gr bullets.... I like heavy artillery but I'm tired to burn that much paper to punch hole in paper at 300 yards. Yes in Québec we don't have farther range... That's why I want to make my Mauser conversion.

For all the other caliber Larryh128 submit to me, they are all great but i want to burn less powder then they do. If the bolt face had fit I'd probably made a 6.5mm Grendel. Supersonic to 800 yards ( i know it's to far for us... lol), 45000cup max load and burn less than 30 grain of varget... But it's a .440 bolt face the same as PPC and 7,62x39 Russian ammunition. And as far has i know, 300 savage, 250 savage and 7mm BR are all rated at 46000 cup max load on hodgdon data site. But I'll take the idea and mix it in my head... 6,5x55mm Swedish are very, very good i know it...lol

Thank guys

Francis

I have been a fan of the 300 savage and it will almost duplicate the .308 winchester. So if you want something for deer or bear, then go .300 with an excellent bullet selection.
