300 rum load help

I have a remington 700 bdl bought about two years ago off a guy was still in the box. He won it like 20 years ago never did anything with it. Bought a nx8 for on top and ended up putting a ag composite stock on it with a adjustable check peice. Problem I'm having is I cannot seem to get anything to shoot the way I want out of it. I've tried Barnes ttsx,180 and 200gr accubond and now 180 partition. Best I could get was about inch and a half groups with the 200gr accubonds and also shot a buck out west with that load this year. Reason I'm trying the 180gr portions now is the guy had 2 boxes of factory ammo when I bought the gun and dang thing loved 180gr factory cor lok. I really was hoping to get the 200gr accubonds to shoot good like I've read all over the internet but seems no matter what powder or bullet just can't get there. Also I'm running factory mag length on my loads. Only other idea I have maybe is the berger classic hunter.

I have 3
they all are sub moa with factory Remington 180gr
They really surprised me with the accuracy but remington doesn't make them anymore from what I can tell. Well I take it back just found some at midwayusa. Gonna order a box just to retry them and see if the shoot as good as the old box i started with.

If you added a stock to the rifle you may have to bed the stock. Changed the stock on mine and that is what I had to do, and Like @Rick300 posted, Retumbo and Nosler Accubond work great.

Like Murray said get a good bedding job.
If you start reloading go to the 4" mag box so the bullet isn't stuffed way down in the case.

So it shot good and than you changed stock and doesn't load develop in new stock?
I originally shot it with factory bdl and loads were all same size groups I get now reason i bought the ag stock was for a better check welds with big nightforce scope. The ag is bedded not showing any movement with the indicator test.

What powder are you using. Mine shoots in the .3's with Retumbo and 200 Accubonds
How many grains of retumbo do you run. Doing some searching on the internet seeing allot of guys saying 93 to 95grs of retumbo and velocitys at 3150 to 3200. Nosler list max at 91.5 which may have been as high as I tried.

I also had the best luck with Retumbo and was shooting 185 and 210 Bergers. Since you say it shoots factories well, a powder change might just do the trick.

I shot 92 grains of retumbo and 200 acubonds. That rifle also shot 210 vld’s with the same charge of 92 grains very well. Mine is a 26” and it ran 3060-3090 depending on the accubond or Vld. Id shoot it a few times in the early fall after f-class league and it was always a 9-10 @ 600. The 300 rum is an elks worst nightmare.

I didn’t shoot anymore than 92.5 in mine with the 200’s. 95gr with a 200+…. I don’t think that’s a good idea.

Now I have shot 95 grains of retumbo with a 150 barnes triple shock. That wil get you 3500 and hits deer like a bolt of lightning.

I would be careful going off of other people's loads in ll likelihood with your stock magbox you have alot of the bearing surface shoved down in the case.

You have to be careful with lot to lot variations with Retumbo. I bought a 1lb bottle for initial load development and settled on 94 grains at 3250fps. I then purchased some more and the first time I shot it, I blew the primers out of every load. I had to back down to 91grs at 3200 to keep it safe. It still shoots small though.

^^^^ I have had that problem with Retumbo, but it was with loads loaded a year earlier that had way more pressure than when loaded. I think they increased pressure with age.

check out the current (Feb 26) issue of RELOADER magazine. There is a lengthy article on the .300 RUM and load data for it. Might be of help to you.

Ive owned a few 300 ultra mags. I really miss shooting that cartridge but its a monster and takes alot to control it. It my opinion.
the torque of the bullet alone engaging the rifling tweaks the entire action every shot.
Ive watch some slow motion videos that had sensors all over the rifle and action it was pretty cool years back. Im sure its still floating around..
After shooting and owning 300ultra mags if i ever do it again. Its going in some rediculous chassis that can handle it with a nice heavy barrel and break.
Try the buisness card shim under the barrel as others have mentioned a new stock means different harmonics. And the 300 RUM is a race car -dragster of the 30cal.
That bullet is rumbling as it goes down the barrel..the action and barrel are whipping all over..
Soooo the buisness card shim my dampen good vibration ..owwww wooooo hahaha made me think of beach boy song..
Good luck

It's fairly common to see comments that Accubombs need some jump to shoot small. In everything I've tried them in, I would agree. Not always sub MOA, but somewhere between .050 & .100", usually around .060" or so, seems to work best. But there's that one rifle in the closet that absolutely hates them unless jammed .010 or .015" into the rifling. 'Tis a puzzlement.

Hearing lots of good things about Hammer Bullets. Maybe worth a try?

I'm in a unleaded state and going to try and come up with some suitable loads for hunting with my .300 RUM. I have 2 rifles this caliber, one is in a target stock and I have loads worked up for it with SMK and H1000 but the one I want to use for hunting with unleaded projectiles I'm thinking of Hornady CX-165 etc.
Would Retumbo be a good powder to start out with the lighter projectiles ? The heavier bullets in mono are so long for the weight It requires them to be seated into the case a mile or so.
