He seems to like to be technically right, which is the best kind of right to be. In the world of the everyday we call that a pedant. Pedantry is a favorite hobby of mine but even I have limits. He's slightly beyond my limits for pedantry tolerance.
Lots of things are done to cartridge cases to make them different from the parent case and for lots of reasons. 270win was made longer than 30-06 so you couldn't close the bolt on one in a 30-06 rifle. Remington was PROBABLY (I am guessing) trying to prevent some one from using there case in one of somebody else's rifles and being included in the law suit when it blows up. Who know what action some back yard experimenter used for his 404 Jeffery wildcats. I am guessing but it probably needs some thing stronger than a small ring Mauser, others may not thing so.

I believe you have the right idea here, but the wrong pair of cartridges. The 270 and 30-06 are identical from case-head to shoulder. The simple action of necking a case down increases the shoulder length and if case OAL then remains unchanged shortening the neck. Winchester added the 30 thou' or so neck length thus lost back in increasing the OAL.AFAIK, 270 Win does chamber in most 30-06 rifles, which will be safe but disappointing ballistically given the effects of a 0.277" diameter bullet rattling down a 0.300/308" barrel. All that would stop it chambering is the extra 30 thou length, but many 30-06 chambers will have that amount of longitudinal clearance in the neck area. The reverse switch, chambering a 30-06 round in a 270 Win rifle is dangerous, really so, but a 0.031" larger diameter bullet should stop that happening. (I bet more than a few fools have managed it though through brute force and ignorance.)
The 30-06 spin-off that was made differently to stop mischambering was the 280 Rem whose body to shoulder junction was moved forward to stop it chambering in a 270 Win rifle. With the 280's bullet only a nominal 0.007" fatter than the 270's it would likely manage to fit in most 270 chamber leades. So whilst reforming 270 brass out of surplus 30-06 (a practice once done on a vast scale given all the cheap surplus brass there was in the US at one time) is a doddle, just run it through a 270 sizer die, making 280 Rem brass needs a false shoulder to be created and fireforming to move the shoulder forward.

Can I use 280 Remington for 6.5 Gibbs or Sherman? I found a good deal on RWS 280 Remington so I bought for an upcoming 6.5.

I did a lot with the 404 case starting back in the early 90's. Guess where we got the idea from? The Imperial Mag line in Canada and from Randy. 2.5" long to full length. Great case with RWS brass.
Can't be formed from 40 S&W. Can't be formed from 10mm either (large primer v. small primer). Not sure what the point I was trying to make was.
It wouldn't surprise me if Remington did not base the RUM off the Jeffery at all. Rebated rim so as to retain the regular magnum bolt. Fits in a 700 long action and optimized for 180 gr or so bullets (shoulder location, OAL, neck length). My suspicion is that the base diameter of the case is the largest that Remington deemed possible while still retaining sufficient steel around the case in the barrel tenon. It's the opinion of more than a few gunsmiths that things like the 338 Lapua are really too big for a 700 action, and that the RUMs are as big as you should go. RUM base diameter is 0.550", and 338LM is 0.587" Add this all up, and you end up with a case that's similar to 404. Perhaps inspired by things people did with 404 Jeffery cases would be a better way to put it.
Yea but Remington made 338 Lapuas in 700 actions. I don't know for sure but maybe they had to have a few have problems before they believed that the 700 was too small. I have no real knowledge of the 357 sig being based on the 40 other than what I have read. Thats why the question marks. Perhaps Remington had ideas about how much case capacity they needed and what neck shape ect ect and the RUM just happened. However I doubt it, it's way easier to copy some thing than design from scratch.
