300 rum barrel length

What is the shortest length most guys run on the 300 rum for a carry gun before it kills its performance? Speed and accuracy? Thanks

When you are talking about one of the "Super-Mags" burning copious amounts of SLOW BURNING powder, any barrel under 26" would be short changing the benefits of pushing heavy projectiles and superior velocities. The whole idea behind shooting LARGE, VASTLY OVERBORE cartridges is to do at FURTHER distances, what, for lack of better terminology, "non-super mag" cartridges can do at shorter distances. Cutting a barrel shorter than 26" would be like putting a small carburetor on a drag racing car that needs LOTS of fuel!

That's kinda what I figured, sooo now what caliber is at the top of the heap in a 22 to 23 inch barrel range that will be used for pack hunts for elk and mule deer . Barrel life is not a concern. I will be loading for it. And I'll leave my ultra at 26 inches!

I would go for a .338-06A.I. If you are persuadable to go to a 23" barrel, a 24" should be agreeable. If it is, the .338-06A.I. would be very hard to beat. A .338 / 210Gr Nosler Partition thru the ribs of an Elk will knock the dog out of him!

I just checked on the .338-06 (NON-A.I.) and you can propel a 210 Nosler at 2740 with 62.5grs of H4350 (Reloaders nest load data) with a 22" barrel. The A.I. "version" with a 24" barrel should comfortably send that bullet out at 2800! T-Rust me, that is a formidable Elk load!

With a 22" barrel a 338 WM will send 200g bullet at ~3000 fps. That'll anchor a lot of game with authority.

I have taken most everything in NA and Ca with 300wm, 280AI and7-08

if you are staying below the CA border, a 280AI, 7-08 AI or 7x57ai will do everything you need, if you want to whamp them super bad then the 300wm, 338 etc and of course the 35 Whelan.

Conventional wisdom says you can not maximize it's total potential in a short barrel, BUT............In a short barrel: more is still more.
I run 24" on a couple 338 edge (300 rum necked up) with 300grain bullets over 89.0 grains of slow powder......which any fool knows needs a 30"+ barrel to maximize.
Every time I shoot them I cry about the velocity potential I loose by not having that extra 6" of barrel to pack around...........or not................. 2840fps.
They still out perform the 338 winchester by 500fps from the same exact barrel (before re-chambering up to the Edge).
More is still......well...... more.
