If your just going to be shooting hunting bullets in the 212gr. Or less a 1-10 twist barrel will work just fine.

Hornady settled on a 1-8.5 twist barrel for SAAMI spec. We made them quite a few barrels for testing in everything from 8 twist to 10 twist.

If your going to shoot heavier bullets than I would say go faster twist.

If I recall correctly the 225’s should shoot fine thru a 10 twist but you might be giving up some bc on the bullets.

Earlier last year I built a F open gun in .300PRC. I’m only running 225’s and 230’s thru it. According to my twist cacl’s The 230’s need a 1-9.24 twist min at 2800fps. At 3000fps they need something like a 1-9.52 if memory serves me correctly. I put a 1-9 twist on my gun. I’m running the bullets at an honest 2900fps out of my gun. Gun shoots excellent.

Hey Frank

thank you for the info, Ill be shooting at the range mostly and a bit of Elk hunting with it, Im looking at testing out the two factory offering to start but did pick up some 220gr Lapua ScenarL and Berger 210gr VLD Hunting bullets to test out,

Ive ordered a 9.5 twist barrel so should be a good compromise.

Thanks again

I run one of your 1-8.5 twist 27 in. on my 300WM and it shoots very well. I will keep the same size/type of barrel on the 300PRC build. I see that Hornady was getting 2811 fps. out of a 24 in. barrel. Maybe I can get over 2900 with the longer barrel....? IMO I believe that a 10 twist is obsolete for ELR shooting. I think you need at least a 9 twist depending on the projectiles you want to shoot.. JMO
I don't think that I will notice much between the two cartridges.... I am excited to see.

Ok the #4 barrel for my 300 PRC Stiller action build hasn't shown up yet.................so I had a Kimber Montana 8400 300 win mag donor laying around and a 26" Hells canyon Carbon Fibre 1-9.5 twist barrel so my gunsmith suggested we put a 300 PRC together with that action,

He lengthened the mag box to 3.7” and opened the bottom of the action up a tiny bit, hand made one of his special brakes, trued and squared the action, lightened the trigger, some pewter gunkote, added palm swell and high comb on the Montana stock and a cool paint job as well as a carbon Fibre Bolt handle, Talleys and a Zeiss V4 4-16x44 on top and Im off to the range in the morning !

I would like to know how's the recoil, I am thinking about building a 300 prc vs. a 338 lm for big game hunting.

It does, no doubt. But it is a sure fire killer. A 30 cal is not in the same league. You can put on a break. You never notice the recoil when hunting. Light handloads are great for practice.
