300 Lapua Magnum (aka 30-338 Lapua) and 230gr Bergers

Is anyone else playing with the big 30's? I recently had Mark Pharr at Tumbleweeds build one for me, and we're starting to experiment with different loads. Both Retumbo and H1000 have shot well, but velocities are only in the 2750fps range.

I'm hearing/reading those numbers from guys shooting the 300WM. Of course I haven't personally witnessed it over a chrono, so who knows.

Anyone have any input???

Thanks,

Dan

I get 2925 fps out of my 300 WM with Retumbo and the 210 berger vld's. 2750 with a 338 case would make me think your chrono is way off or you have a lot of room to go yet. Goodluck.

Shooter here warren dean gets almost 3000 with 230 Bergers and a 300 win mag using retumbo. Try some slower powder

That should probably be close. Maybe a little more with the right powder, Freebore and barrel. Matt
Yes, I think there was probably 50-75 fps more in it but the freebore was defiantly not enough to maximize the performance on that particular gun.

I get 3200 with no pressure from a 215Hybrid with Retumbo, out of my .30-338 Norma Imp 30°, 28" Bartlein 1:10.
My smith likes 230s in his, and is running them @ 3075fps. Also, Retumbo...

To compare:
freebore of our wildcat reamer is .225" ( a bit short for the .230s)
Measured avg. H2o capacity of formed cases is 110.0gr

.300Lapua Mag is listed @ ~113gr

Dragman's recollection of 230s @ 3125 seems to be a safe & reasonable expectation for the .300 Lapua!

Reamer print here:

I guess the chrono could be off, but from what I've seen from Quickload it's right on the mark.

Barrel is 24" (had this one made with a shorter barrel because I'm running a suppressor).

COAL is in the 3.800" range.

Looks like you may want to try a case full of slower powder kissing the bottom of bullet .....
Just recently worked up a decent load in my 300 Long Range Hunter wildcat (30/338 NM IMP 37* confirmed 111.0 gr h20 cap. .278 lead and .2623 throat) the 230 Berger Hybrids seat with just bt past neck/shoulder junction but I'm running the Chinchaga 236 gr RBT ULD ST Hybrid at 3146 fps with 100.0 gr of RL50 for .250" 3 shot groups at 100 yards with zero signs of pressure, have not loaded past 100.0 gr yet and haven't taken her out past 100 yards yet.
30" 5R 10 tw Bartlein in Light Palma contour

Have loads ready for ladder tests with RL33/230 Bergers, 50BMG/230 Bergers and RL33/225 Hornady Matchimage.jpeg

Is this guy involved with Alco Bullets??? I ask because I see them steel tips... Alco was selling many steel tips to guys shooting the 300 Blackout but the good old tyrants paid him a visit to suspend sell.. Even though they aren't illegal the ATF still forced him to stop selling the item... Lawyers would cost a lot so he did... So, if your selling them to I recommend everyone interested buy these up while you can get them...

I thought the tips look like aluminum. Matt

Chinchaga Bullets and Alco Bullets are not affiliated and in fact did not know of each others existence until just a few months ago ,

Al did tell me about the fiasco but they were targeting the steel tipped bullets that can be used in pistols, the solution was to STOP using steel tips and use the aluminum instead, there is absolutely no difference in accuracy between the two

Yep, that's pretty missed up... The steel/bullet ratio wasn't illegal he was selling either... Also, if we let them "tyrants" use pistol as an excuse everything that shoots in a Thompson Contender will be banned because of excess penetration they will say! I think he should have fought it with help from 2nd Amendment organizations and gun forums like this one..

They have both kinds.. The thing about having the choice between the two is you can adjust the "FOB" (forward of balance point) like you can with an arrow to aid in accuracy... I haven't seen to much data regarding "FOB" with bullets but it has to do something...
