300 HAM’R Wilson Combat conversion

Came across this last night and am interested
I currently have a Ruger American in 300 aac and really like it
It is a deer thumper inside 100 yds and most loads I have developed for it shoot under an inch
I was wondering if anyone here had experience with the conversion and probably looking for a nudge ti do this .
But would like to head hands on experiences
I don’t have any doubts about the quality, was more curious about cartridge preformance
Thanks , Kenneth

I have not done the HAMR but have done a 30/223 if you would be interested in that info. Mine was done on a Savage 10.

So what’s the difference between the 399 aac and 300 hammer ?
Both cartridges being based on the 223 , was wondering were there was room for significant differences and curious about ballistics and any other pieces of knowledge you could put on me
Thanks , Kenneth

Worded that wrong , what I meant to ask was were did the 30/223 fit in at ? Would seem the 300aac and 300 Ham’r would not leave significant room for improvement in the 223 case
I’ll look into the 30/223 see what it’s all about

I would love to see your info on the 30/223. I have dies for a 30/223 Ingram and like the look of that. I have done a 40mm 223 cased wildcat a while back. Would love to put the entire case to use in a bolt action.

The 30/223 project started on an AR platform. It basically is a simple neck up of a .223 case. My understanding it was done for hand gun steel target shooting back in late 70s or so. There isnt much load info available. I worked with it for over a year off and on in the AR platform. I never could get it to feed reliably with anything but flat or round nose bullets. I acquired a Black out barrel for my Savage action . I shot it for a bit to get some baseline to work from for comparison. I then reamed it to 30/223. I used data from 300 HAMR as starting point and worked up from there in small increments.
My intent for this was a short range deer rifle that was economical in terms of powder and had reduced recoil. By short range I mean out to 150 yards. Most of my projects are very low budget also. I'm fortunate to be able to do all my own work.
Long story short I have a bolt rifle that is accurate (.500" at 100 yards) and uses about 25 grs of powder. Basically free or cheap brass. Velocity with the load I'm using is about 2400 fps by my Magneto Speed. I am using 125 gr Hornady bullets. I have tried 110 gr bullets to good effect as well but wanted 125s for the deer. Hopefully in a month or so I'll be able to have a successful deer season.

Sounds good. Good luck on deer.

I tried using 7 TCU data in my HAMR with limited success. groups were over an inch. When I tested it with H335 things got pretty dicey really quick. Pressures signs all over the place. So not sure how that 7 TCU data didnt translate to HAMR in 335. Lesson learned stick to published Wilson Combat data.

Glad to hear your 30/223 project worked out.

I think the main point of 300 Blackout is to shoot 200+ grain bullets at subsonic speeds. I don't think you can fit the big ones in the Hamr, so it's intended more for shooting 125-150 grain bullets fast.
