I have a friend that is extremely fond of his 1950ish Sako in 300 H&H. He wants me to help develop a load in the 200gr range and possibly another in 155gr. He's accumulated a decent amount of brass but it's a lot of different brands and ages. First question: is the Hornady brass for this caliber worth a damn? He is estimating about 100 rounds a year between 2 rifles and I want to make sure the brass can handle 3-4 loadings. Second question: Is there other brass, besides $3.40 a piece Nosler, that is worth investing in?

I appreciate any advice on loading this cartridge I can get. I do plenty for 300WM and 7 Practical but this one is quite different from those.

Hornady brass is fine for about 3 loads when used in the upper node. Primer pockets loosen up from the upper end pressures. I'm not talking about exceeding pressures just higher end. If you run the loads in the wiffle ball range you should get 5-6 loads from the brass.

One of the loads I used in my .300 H&H for elk was the Nosler Partition 180 gr. over Re-25 for about 3,000 fps. Very moderate load but extremely accurate.

You might look at the Berger 215 Hybrid since it is showing superb accuracy in several cartridges.

I have not achieved decent accuracy with 150 grain bullets. Mine seems to like 165 and up.

See if you can locate some new old stock W-W cases. Best I ever used in the 300 H&H. Sorry to say that I sold mine with the model 70 rifle some years ago. Back in the old days we used W-W cases to form all the wildcats and some Wby cases.

Check the twist before you buy too many bullets. Id bet in that rifle youll be looking at 180max

I have been reloading for the 300 H&H since the mid 1980s. Just rebarreled my first big game rifle last year, a R-700 in 300 H&H.

As far as brass goes, WW brass is really good as is Norma. REM is ok, but needs lots of prep. I havent used Hornady brass, cant help you there.

I have found the best balance on big game to be a 165gn bullet and H4831. The Nosler Accubond is plenty accurate, holds up well on critters and bucks the wind better than a lot of hunting bullets.

I have shot a lot of Speer 125 TNTs and Nosler Ballistic Tips for fun, but not the best choice on large game.

Graf's has Norma 300 H&H. Mine likes the 200gr Woodleigh with H4831.

I think my pre64 M70 had a 1-10t and I had no problem with heavier bullets. Used 200gr noslers and the old 200 speer. Unaltered, it was about a 11/2 moa rifle which was fine for hunting.

We have got consistent 3/4 moa for three shots with 180 Nosler Partitions, IMR4350 (65.0 grains) and CCI 250s (also FED M215s) in an original Remington 721 using well prepped REM brass. Velocity was 2,820 with Magnetospeed. Good elk medicine!

My buddy had an old R721B 300H&H. Did not look as good as my M70 but was more accurate. Around the 3/4" groups you are getting. He sent it out to P.O. Ackley and he said it didn't need any work, everything was
spot on. Those were they days at the Rem shop in Ilion, NY in the 50's.

I have a M721 in 300H&H. It was my dad's favorite rifle. He loaned it to me before a Nevada Hunt, and told me not to return it. It was the saddest day in my life, other than the day he died. It's in one of my safes. I think I have some Federal Nickle brass with Reloader 22 and Barnes X bullets. 69 Grains if I remember. I take it with me on every big game hunt, but haven't shot it in years.

300 h&h is one of the easiest cartridges to tune. It joins the 30-30 and 375 h&h in ease of ownership. These 3 are the only ones i can think of that will shoot as good as they need to be with a dart thrown at a loading book load.

I owned a 700 Classic in .300 H&H for quite a few years. It is a great cartridge, brass lasts forever as long as you don't go nuts with hot loads, it's accurate and likes a lot of powders. I was also surprised to find that brass rarely needs trimming.

Mine liked bullets from 165 gr to 200 gr and the 200 gr were very good at taking large game.

I sold this gun a few years ago as it was just sitting in the safe as I don't hunt big game anymore. I still miss it to this day.

I appreciate the info, the 215 Berger Hybrid was what I planned to load for the heavier bullet. The performance it has displayed in long range hunting is phenomenal. I wish there was a better, more economical, choice for brass. He has a couple boxes of old Winchester ammo which I know is loaded in brass that is solid compared to Win's new offerings. I just need to find 100-120 so we can keep everything consistent. His barrel is a 1:10 so we can easily get the 215 stabilized.

Does anyone have any base to ogive measurements for a Ruger #1 in 300 H&H? I'm trying to do initial load development for a rifle I don't have access to, at least until we get to the range and start testing.

I haven't reloaded for my M721 since 09, but my log says 3.926" is what I used in my chamber, from ogive to base. I had the headspace milled by a smith that I shouldn't have trusted way back when.
