300 H&H

I'm new at long range shooting and I was just wondering if the 300 H&H is good Cal. to be using if I'm just wanting to shoot up to 500 yards. I have a 1960 Win. model 70 that I'm currently using. I want to buy a Rem. Model 700P sniper rifle for my all time target rifle. But I can't afford to buy the Rem. yet. Any advice from anybody would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Greg

The 300 H&H will sure shoot good out to 500 yards but you really don't need that much powder burning to do it.
A 110 grain bullet out of a 300H&H needs 65 plus grains of powder to run it 3600.
A 107 grain bullet out of a 6br needs only about 30 grains of powder to run it to 3000.
At 500 yards a 6BR will out shoot a 300H&H unless the winds running over 30 MPH..

Thanks for all of the advice. However I won't be selling this rifle due to the sentimentle value of it is worth more than money to me being that it belonged to my father. I'm hoping to purchase a new rifle though in the next couple of months. I'm just wondering if I can just keep using this rifle even though nothing has been done to it since its make in 1960. If just for a little while longer. Right now I'm just shooting at 100-300 yrd.'s with it.
