300 H&H Magnum

I have a 1960, Winchester model 70 300 H&H that was given to me by my father. He bought it new in Spokan, WA and used it for Elk hunting. I now have been using it for long range target shooting. I know that there are other rifles that would be better for such a thing but right now this is all I have. I do my own reloading so that I can aford to shoot it. My question is, should I keep using this rifle for target shooting because it is fun to shoot? or should I purchase a new rifle in a .308 such as a Remington 700P? I'm a state trooper so this rifle would be my choice of rifles. Someone let me know your opinion.
Thanks, Greg

Hi Greg! there's nothing wrong with a .300 H&H for long range shooting... As a matter of fact, Ben Comfort won the Wimbledon Cup in the Thirties shooting a .300 vs everybody else shooting a 30-06! Just make sure your rifle is not a collector item, otherwise the cartridge is quite efficient for a magnum and the barrel should last more than it would with an Ultramag chambering! Shoot Lapuas 155 Moly and a powder in the H-4350 range, clean often, don't let the barrel heat too much and you're the king of the range. Besides, you can have your cake and eat it too:Whenever the barrel quits on you, because it will someday, you don't have to purchase a new rifle, you could keep the receiver and the stock and switch to a brand new barrel in stainless steel chambered for a more efficient cartridge with a magnum rim, like the WSM, SAUM or WSSM series...
Merry Christmas!

I would not consider another rifle if you can shoot this one good and like it.
It can be down loaded to still shoot very nice while just playing, and loaded up to shoot about any thing that walks with authority. Just keep it and use the money you would spend on a different rifle and buy lots of reloading supplies with it...........

Your M70 rifle in 300 H&H has moved into a collector status and if the stock and bluing are in really good shape 90-95% I would retire it. If your rifle shows average 80% wear or so I would keep on using it for elk hunting but get another rifle for other hunting and general shooting. A 308 caliber in a Remington, CZ, Weatherby Vanguard or similar quality rifle would give you a chance to shoot more.
