300 Blk / subsonic Load info

I’ve got a dandy little load for my model seven 300 blackout that uses Solo1000 powder underneath a sierra 220 round nose or SMK bullet.

Is significantly more quiet than a sub sonic load made to cycle an AR-15.

Bolt guns should be significantly quieter than the AR platform. Here is a little video I did a few years ago. Please pay no attention to the goofy guy behind the rifle.....

Nice!! Is that the subsonic load with the Lehigh?

That is the subsonic load, however I am pretty sure those were not the Lehigh's. Most likely those are 200 SMK or maybe 208 AMAX. I very seldom just shoot the Lehigh unless I am hunting. I have found (in my rifle) the Lehigh's shoot within (moa of Rabbit) right with the SMK's out to almost 150 yards. Meaning if it is 12MOA up for the SMK's, the Lehighs will be within MOA of rabbit at 12 MOA. I still usually limit my deer shots to 85ish yards (the distance from my rifle stand to my feeder).

This is. Lehigh Defense 200 grain me I recovered from a whitetail shot at 85 yards with a MZ of 1050. I shot him broadside behind the front leg. The bullet was just under the skin on the opposite side. Lehigh replaced the 200 grain with 194's.

I had a call with them yesterday and was told that the 168? grain performs just as well.

Wow that bullet looks nasty.. I bet the wound channel is huge..
I should be receiving the shipment tomorrow..Thanks for sharing!!

I just received my RCBS dies. It's the two die set.
Will this work with the Lehigh 194 gr Max expansion?
I read in the instructions and it said something about straight wall brass and possible crimping. I've never crimped any brass.
Thanks..

I personally don't crimp my rifle ammo. I guess you could. I just don't.
I also prefer the seating die with a micro top on it (for several calibers not just 300 BO).
The reason is I shoot several diferent bullets, and 300 BO is at the top of my list.
I shoot 110 TAC TX, 125 Bal tip, 130 soft point, 200 SMK, 220 SMK, 208 Amax, 200 VLD, and 200 Lehigh.
Not sure RCBS has a micro top for the 300 BO, but Redding does sell it to add on to most all of their dies.
* Reminder that I have had my caliber for 10+ years, so they may have a different die set now

I don't crimp mine because I'm shooting a single shot. Might need a crimp in a repeater.

The RCBS has just a threaded stud with a lock nut.. probably good enough for what I'm doing.. I'll "set it and forget it."

I found a beaver that was hit by a car near the folks place. I dragged the beaver over into field. Shot it twice with the new load. I found the boolit lying on the ground just past the beaver. Lucky. I placed the bollit on top of the beaver.. looks like it will do the job!!Thanks P1!!!

I use 195gr cast polymer coated bullets ahead of h110. I shoot a lot of them through 2 different ar rifles and one bolt gun all suppressed of course or what would be the point of the load lol. I have shot countless rabbits with this load. I like the 195 Cast polymer coated bullets. Any lighter of a bullet and I have problems keeping it subsonic while cycling an ar action reliably. I just like to shoot and this is a elcheapo special.

It's be awhile since I've been on here. Ishot two deer with the Lehigh SubSonics and only found one deer. The first deer I heard the hit, saw the kick and ran off. No blood. I had the gun zeroed at 95 yds. The deer was at 82 when I shot it. The second deer was at approximately 60 yards and I was way high, shot thru the spine and layed down, had to shot thru the head.
The Lehigh did not expand, was just a hole.
Lots of questions with this. The load I did was for 1050 fps.. but the bullet must have
not expanded. Any ideas? Should just use factory Hornady ammo.

Do

Do you have pics of the non expanding bullet? The way my Lehigh are designed, I cant see how they couldn't expand.
I have shot 208 amax subsonic at deer, and even 200 SMK and this did not expand. I never expected them too. Broadside shot was 308 hole in and 308 hole out. Only recovered one bullet of SMK and that was a shot I purposely put into the opposite shoulder. The tip was only slightly crooked from hitting bone.

I don't have any pics of the bullet. I've never been able to recover any bullet due to "pass thru." I am really surprised that the bullet did not expand as well. It looks like it would just "butter fly" when it hits flesh.
I suppose I need to. Do some range time with these bullets nd adjust for distance. I've been using a 65 gr Vmax in a 243 and they makes a mess when it enters.

Subs are hard, you need exact range and velocity or you can have the troubles you described.

With a 95 yard zero, your first shot at 82 was about 1.5” high. The second was 3.25” high. That’s based on 1050fps. +/- 10fps will change those numbers 1/4” or more. JBM does list that bullet, those numbers would be based on my area and normal shooting conditions.

The Lehighs like tissue, bone they just flatten out. So without knowing where the first shot hit it’s a tough call. Since you heard the shot hit, it’s possible it hit the shoulder blade, it might have flattened out and not penetrated. Or passed between the spine and lungs.

The second shot sounds like you know what happened, but again they don’t like bone.

It takes a bit more thought to hunt with subs, shot placement has a less room for error.

Dellet, thank you very much for your reply. I went and did some shooting at 70 yds and some at 50 yds with Hornady ammo. I did harvest at deer with my rifle "zero'ed" at 70 yds and shot a deer at 38 yds and hit lungs while he was walking. He went. 25 yds and fell over. I got some Lehigh 168 gr controlled fracture to test and will hunt with it Thursday. Can wait to see the results, as that is one nasty looking bullet.

Are you useing a crono to check your speeds..??? Just because they are SS loads don't meen they have to be super slow , just slow enough to not break the speed of sound...
