300 Ackley Magnum/300 Weatherby Improved

The 300 Ackley is actually the 300 H&H improved. It's virtually impossible to improve the 300 Weatherby Magnum.

The 300 Weatherby improved is the 308 BAER,, 30RDP, 30 Goodling and a few others. I would pick another case like the Lapua or WSM. Matt

Also looked at a 30 Nosler. . Trying to stay with a mag bolt face and push a 215 hybrid to 2950 in a 26" tube. Necking up 28 Nosler seems pretty easy and no forming brass.

If you are looking for a B-I-G .30 Mag of sorts, there is one that rarely gets any attention. A friend of mine built one with a 34" barrel. He used to send out a 180gr Nosler Ballistic Tip at 3900F.P.S. It was a "L-O-N-G R-A-N-G-E "Stand Gun".. It was "relatively" easy to form but it was extremely accurate. I saw him shoot a 5 shot group at 440 yards that was right at an inch! The cartridge is called "The 30 X .416 Rigby"! He shot, IF my memory serves me correctly, 142grs. of AA 8700 or "around" 135grs of H50BMG. The BIGGEST drawback is that you have to have a special boltface for the cartridge. But it is relatively easy to open up a "Normal .532" boltface.

The 300 Ackley and Weatherby are both made off the 300 H&H case. I had 2, 300 Ackleys and both shot great and I used Weatherby cases to fire form for the Ackley. If your stuck on these 2 cases but want a LITTLE more just go with the 300 RUM. In the long run everything is easier to get and most of the time cheaper for the RUM. Plus no fire forming, wasting the bbl. Don't get me wrong I loved both of my 300 Ackleys and both shot great its just easier to build a 300 RUM and order everything you need and start loading and shooting.
Just my .02.

You are correct JG! I was going to build a .30 Super. It is a .375 case blown out, shortened neck (more case, like a 6mmBR / Dasher) with a 40 Degree shoulder. I spoke with Kerry O'Day of MatchGrade Arms and he showed me that a .300 R.U.M. would equal or surpass it in performance with no forming / fireforming. I still have that .300 R.U.M. But it is NO MATCH for the .30 X .416 Rigby, IF the OP is looking for B-I-G!

The RUM definitely no match for the 30x416. At this point he has to decide HOW BIG he wants to go. My buddy hunts long range and he started with the 300 RUM then went to the 338 Edge and then to the 375 Cheytac and has never looked back. I've had his gun for a summer or 2 and what a badazz caliber that is. 350 grn smk going around 3350. We had a 14" sprocket hanging at a 1000 yds and when I hit it with the 300 Ackley with a 210 vld at 3100 fps it rocked it pretty well. When you hit it with the 375 it looked like it was trying to rip it off the chains!!!!!! His friends still hunt with the 300's and 338's but he says nothing kills like that 375 he is extremely happy with it.

I bet that 30x416 would be pretty impressive with 240 grn smk's.

I have a friend of mine who is a L/R Tactical shooter. He shoots BOTH the .375 Chey-Tac and the .408 Chey-Tac. They are tremendous rounds! He states that the .375 Chey-Tac is extremely accurate and can reach out to 2000 yards with no problem! I can not imagine it's killing capabilities on game! I am quite sure that it would anchor a T-Rex easily if we had such game around today!

There are 2 versions of the 300 ATLAS:
1 - is a 300RUM shortened
2 - is a 300WBY improved (I bought one that Lenard Baity built) I liked it so well I sent a dummy round in and had a reamer built for it. It is a nice round i am shooting the 230 bergers at 2950fps without the extra kick of the RUM case.

Dragman,
I use the 300 weatherby magnum as my parent case. I'm able to push a 208 grain head 3150 FPS with excellent accuracy.

I am sure. I ran the 208's out of my ATLAS at around 3200fps. I was able to run the 208's out of my RUM at 3335fps.
For whatever reason my ATLAS just seemed to really like the 230's might have been that barrel or that build I suppose.

I have a RCBS CUSTOM 2 die set in 300 H&H mag. ack. Imp. 40* if anyone is interested also a used Wilson neck and seater die set in 300 ack 300 weatherby mag case as the parent case F/S.
Thanks

Dragman,
Is that Atlas (300WBY IMP) built on a Phoenix Action?
Baron

It was!
I got some loading info from you a while back. That phoenix action now is a 300WSM and I built another ATLAS on a Remington trued action with the reamer I had made using that phoenix's dummy round.
