30 x 48 chambering

Anybody ever hear of a 30 x 48 chambering? A friend just bought one from a local Cabela's.

Built on a Rem 700 receiver, heavy contour stainless 22" barrel, dedicated fiberglass stock. Ident on the barrel is 30 x 48 330 NK., 330 being the chamber neck dia. of course.

If the 48 refers to mm, than that's approx. 1 7/8" for the case length, so it can't be a 30 BR.

Looked through my latest copy of "Cartridges of the World" and it's not shown.

He's a machinest so has no problem pulling the barrel & rechambering (after we borescope it) to a different cartridge if it's not practical to use the barrel.

ps: Meant to say, dedicated "benchrest" fiberglass stock.

I'll take a swing and say it's a Hunter gun?

A lot have their "own" ideas of the perfect Hunter Class cartridge, so the full length 308 has been shortened to fit their criteria. The vast majority shoot the 30x47, but they vary from the full length 308 down to the 30x44, which is the shortest that will pass muster in regards to legal minimum case capacity, the Wolfpup not withstanding.

Frank, It is a hunter cartridge. I happen to to have one.
Mine was built by Geo. Myer years ago. Make the brass out of 308. The Laupa is the best. I and a friend still shoot the 30X48.

Thanks for the info, I'll pass it along when we meet to 'scope the barrel.

Guess the chamber is cut with a 308 reamer, but not run all the way in? Standard 308 dies then must also work?

We just borescoped the barrel, close to new condition, not the slightest indication of firecracking. Measured 1-14 twist. Not a single reamer or tool mark anywhere, appears to have been hand-lapped.

But, after marking one land with a black magic marker and carefully counting the lands & grooves, discovered that it has 9 lands & 8 grooves.

Another question: Any idea on what barrel maker made 30 calibers with 9 lands & 8 grooves?

We're just asking out of curiosity.

Came with an El Paso Weaver 6x, 2 1/4" wide forend, what looks like a modified 700 trigger, set at 3 oz., no safety or bolt release, so gnoble and alf, you were both right-on for it being setup for Hunter Benchrest.

He's going to recut the chamber to a standard 308, and then use it "as-is" with the thought of eventually making a switch-barrel to include a 6 BR. Thanks for the help, Frank

Roger: believe me, we both counted them numerous times after one of the lands was marked with a black magic marker. Mark was make under magnification at the crown, Hawkeye inserted on top of the black marked land & the borescope tube slowly rotated & the lands counted off. 9 lands and 8 grooves.

A frog uses one, it's done with the .22-250 reamer plus a reamer for a .308 neck. No other changes. According to my Google translator, it slightly exceeds the requirements for hunter and seems to be quite accurate.

Frank ...thanks for correcting me...I always thought there were equal lands and grooves....and didnt know that any bbl maker culd do it...ahhaha.....most 4 groove bbls have four lands and 6/6 and 8/8....I need to get out amonst em more often...ahahhaha ...Happy New Yr....Roger

Roger: I may have egg on my face. I just made a circle, drew 9 lands, fairly evenly spaced, then counted the "grooves" in-between and they numbered 9.

There definately were 9 lands, that's what we were concentrating on, I guess there must also be 9 grooves. Don't think any other number is possible.

Geometry was never one of my "best" subjects. :(

Comment added later. All really a moot point now. The guy took the rifle home, pulled off the barrel, recut the chamber to a std. 308, took it out & fired it off the bench. Ouch !!! Too much recoil. Barrel will be replaced with a Krieger & chambered in a 6 BR.

hahahah.....Frank....I was wrong once also......not trying to be a wise guy ......you know ur stuff.....yuour prolly watchin the big game and broke your concentration.......thats why I like the krieger bbls...they only have four grooves,,wink....im whittlin out a similar 6mm version using Lapua 22-250 brass for next season....I need all the help I can get at 1000....im in the 6mm camp that likes the xtra vel. with bullets that may lack the BC of the big uns....but make it up with speed.....and I cant carry a big gun so shoot a LG all the way thru.....just my thoughts on shootin and life......its alwasy nice to share our gun knowledge with each other and those who havent had the 40+yrs of competiton experience we are blessed with.....thats what happens when you get old..you have lots of experience,,hahha.....Roger

It's probably an 8-groove Shilen. Not my favorite kind of barrel although they usually shoot well, but they foul easily. I happen to like 3 and 5-groove tubes. JMHO.

I have a 30X47. It is made on the 300 Savage or you can use the 308 win case with trimming. You must run a 300 Savage case into the size die and it pushes the shoulder back about 10 thousands inch and leaves the case the same over all length. I got mine from the estate of and old bench rest shooter that died. It was on a Ruger 77 action of all things. It is a shooter though.
