After seeing a fellow at the range with Remington R15 in .30 Remington AR, I got to wondering what exactly are the differences between the .30RAR and the .30BR as far as velocity, muzzle energy and accuracy potential are concerned. The two look to have very similar dimensions, though I believe the .30RAR holds just a bit more powder due to it's larger diameter. I didn't see the fellow fire the rifle, so I am not sure of what the capabilities are either. He said it was accurate, but that doesn't mean much.
I know brass quality will give the .30BR an edge, as I don't believe Norma or Lapua makes brass for the .30RAR. But for "real world accuracy" in a hunting/target rifle can the .30RAR be comparable if chambered in a high quality rifle?
Basically, would I have any significant edge using one over the other for a deer rifle using 125gr bullets and brass with minimal prep in a no-turn chamber?
This would be for a light recoiling deer and target rifle for my younger brother. While it doesn't need benchrest accuracy, I would like .5MOA or better, preferably closer to .25MOA. I also like the idea of the .30RAR as I won't need to neck up brass, spend a ton on Lapua brass, and factory ammo is available. And I think it will be easier to teach my brother to reload on a round that doesn't require any special forming, just a basic load and shoot deal. But if I can't get what I am looking for from the .30RAR, then the .30BR may be a viable option as well.
Thanks for any insight, opinions or experiences.
