"30 ppc" from 7.62x39?

I'd like to "build" myself a cheap to shoot accurate plinker. Plan is to use a savage action and shoot 110 vmax up through to the 125 smk. Brass of choice is looking like it'll be lapua 7.62x39 and i'd prefer to go with a no-turn neck. Anybody do something similar and have reamer specs available?

Just neck up 6.5 Grendel brass to 30. It's called a 30 Major. You can use a very slightly modified Redding 6.5 Grendel Type S FL bushing die.

If you contact Mike Ezell, http://EzellCustomRifles.com, he can tell you all about it. He has reamers including no turn. He has two of mine, but they are 332.

It makes a dandy score benchrest cartridge.

Anybody have any experience necking down and improving the x39 case? Price seems right... saw it going for $32 for 100 pieces. I'd love to get that kind of performance out of it but like i said, it'll be a fun/ cheap plinker and I will be using a savage action so I don't expect that kind of results.

We lost a post out of this thread. He had a reamer print number for you for something like what you're looking for.

I only have experience with necking up 6.5 Grendel.

I have off-the-self Redding 6.5 Grendel dies that have had the hole in the top shelf opened up to accept the 30 neck. It's cheap and easy.

The brass is NOT as inexpensive as the number you quote for 7.62x39.

The advantage is that it's known and proven and widely documented here on this site.

You should be able to use Reloader 7, 4198, LT-32, Norma 200 and similar powders. 110-125 grain bullets. Around 1:17 twist depending.

I like the Speer 125 TNT, the 125 Nosler BT and a couple of others for varmints.

Feel free to email or PM me. I'd be happy to chat about it.

Is it intended for Lapua 7.62x39 brass? How does it differ from the parent case?

Sounds like it might be a better so,union for the OP.

I built a 7.62x39mm fun gun using the .223 front baffle to limit bolt travel.Or you could just neck the 7.62 down and use a .308 expander.Getting a reamer ,call dave kiff at Ptg.If I can be of service PM me.

I have emailed kiff requesting said reamer-print. I am not too interested in necking up a grendel case, i'd prefer to load an x39 case (its available and cheap)and fireform. I would assume the neck diameter would be in the .339-342 range? I'm not too worried about the action as it is already chambered in 7.62x39 so the bolt face is already set and with a little work, the mag should work. I am still in the planning stages so its no real rush but I am hoping to have it shooting next summer.

With my no turn 30 Major reamer you can simply run the x39 brass through a 30 Major die, then fireform in the gun. What comes out is a 30 Major, which is in simple terms, a .070 longer 30PPC. I've not tried the Lapua x39 brass but was not satisfied with the life of other makes of x39 brass, whereas the Lapua and Alexander Arms Grendel brass lasts almost forever if loads are kept reasonabe. It has small primers and the small flashole. Believe it or not, brass life of the Grendel brass made it less expensive to shoot than using x39 brass using the loads that I shoot in my br rifles.--Mike Ezell

If you don't lose a lot of brass hunting, with the life of brass in the 30 Major, it's really down in the noise as to costs. You'd be more likely to save money going with a 6mm vs a 7.62 on the price of powder and bullets.

...and you wouldn't have to buy a reamer... Mike has one.

I have a reamer and have chambered a barrel in 270X39 improved( 270 PPC ). It is very accurate for a plinker or kids deer rifle. Hardly any recoil.
