The stock, to a large degree, will dictate the contour because even if you can open up the barrel channel the stock will only allow it to be opened up so far before the edges get thin.I recently purchased a Browning X-Bolt Hell's Canyon Max Long Range in 30 Nosler. I'd eventually like to put a slightly heavier barrel on it for Elk Hunting. What contour, length and manufacturer would you guy's recommend? The stock barrel is 26" and is fluted. Thanks for the input!
Thanks for the reply! The lead time right now for some of the manufacturers is 4-6 month's!The stock, to a large degree, will dictate the contour because even if you can open up the barrel channel the stock will only allow it to be opened up so far before the edges get thin.
As for which barrel company to go with, there are many I would consider premium barrel manufacturers. Do you have a preference between single point cut barrels and button rifled barrels? I have both and they equally shoot very well.
The main two barrel manufacturers I use are Hart and Krieger but I also have Brux, Proof Research, Lilja, Broughton, and Shilen. Haven't had a Bartlein yet but I would easily put them on my premium list and I see a Bartlein barrel in my near future.
With regard to length, I'd stick with a barrel that is 26 inches less muzzle brake and definitely add a good brake to it.
Thanks for the info! The scope I have on it is a Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25X56 FFP. Definitely want to get a good bipod on it too. Needs to be one that can mount to a stud for a sling. For my hunting rifles, I typically use Krieger 4.5 contour. I believe it is their lightest stainless steel contour but is fairly heavy compared to most factory contours. At 26-inches the rifles tend to be between 10.5 and 12 lbs (depending on scope and stock) and balance well. I weighed my 30-28 yesterday and it was 13.2 lbs with the bipod. I don't like to go much heavier on barrels as the balance point starts to get too far forward and they get really annoying to carry slung with muzzle up.
The last two Hart barrels I ordered took exactly 4 weeks from the time I placed the order till it was dropped off by Mr. UPS.Thanks for the reply! The lead time right now for some of the manufacturers is 4-6 month's!
Yes sir! Haven't seen to many that have a 30 Nosler reamer.. Gotta continue the search! The last two Hart barrels I ordered took exactly 4 weeks from the time I placed the order till it was dropped off by Mr. UPS.
Also, there are places that have barrels already in stock so a little Google searching could help you get what you're looking for much quicker.
I didn't realize you were looking for a prefit that was already chambered and ready to install. In that case, yeah, you're probably going to be looking for awhile.Yes sir! Haven't seen to many that have a 30 Nosler reamer.. Gotta continue the search!
For hunting, check out the Hatch Bipod. I have Harris, Atlas, and Cyke but this is my favorite for hunting. Unbelievably versatile, light and reasonably priced (as far as bipods go) https://www.hatchoutwest.com/Thanks for the info! The scope I have on it is a Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25X56 FFP. Those look awesome!! However, my rifle doesn't have a picatinny rail for the bipod to attach too. It has two sling studs. For hunting, check out the Hatch Bipod.
