30 cal tight bore

Whats the tightest 30 cal you've seen? Had a friend spin up a new 308 barrel for me and we got to talking about bushing and he thought he used a 294 bushing on it. We're going to double check it next time we are at our shop but that seems pretty tight

The tightest bore I've ever used is a 0.2975" from Krieger. These were primarily used for the Palma shooters using the shorter shank 155 grain bullets. I use either the .299" (most) or the .300" (least) from Bartlein.

Regards.

He probably misspoke - unlikely to find a .294 bore...maybe a .2994. 0.294 actually won't fit on a standard #3 crowning tool without damaging the rifling.

Shooting good quality match type bullets and shooting a tight vs. a standard bore will have no bearing on accuracy and or barrel life per say.

I don't recommend tight bore and or a tight groove barrels for magnum calibers. If the barrel/rifle isn't properly cleaned/maintained the carbon build up can lead to pressure issues.

We've made .30cal. barrels with .296", .298", .2985", .299", .300" and some special test barrels in .303" and .305" bore sizes. The .305" bore sizes didn't shoot good. Just not a lot of bore/groove depth for the rifling to drive the bullet but these we're special test barrels requested by a customer for testing.
