Probably a dumb question but is there any 30cal cartridge out there larger than a 30-284 or 30-06 AI that will work with a .470 (308) bolt face?

yes 30 x 280 AI,,,,I call it a 30-07,,,,Roger
PS,,,most folks dont realize that the 280 case has aprox 5 gr more cap. than 06',,,,with or without AI ing,,,

Check into the 9.3x62 necked to 30. Lapua brass is available. I think that it has more capacity than the 280 Remington

isnt that based on a 30'06 case ??

Not to my knowledge. It was supposedly introduced in Europe in 1905.

If you google around a bit on "9.3x62 case capacity" and "280 case capacity", you'd be led to believe that the 9.3 has more case capacity.

Necking it down to 30 might be a bit of a peel, but I read a guys post on Benchrest.com that said that he was shooting it in heavy gun in long range benchrest

I guess that I'm a bit of a Lapua bigot, but that's the first thing that I think about when I approach a wildcat cartridge. "Is there Lapua for it?"

I gotta agree on the brass thing, as long as Nosler, Norma, RWS or Lapua is available.

Looking for a goof off kind of cartridge, wanting to get something as close to capacity as I can to one of the Richard Franklin Varminators, 300wsm with a 110 bullet. Not really wanting to spend the money for a new bolt in a Panda action, just checking out if I can get something close to the boiler room of the wsm or not.

As long as we're in the 9.3 area, how about a 9.3x66 (or 370 Sako) necked down. The shoulder is already further forward than the 9.3x62 but same overall case length (and rim size). All peas in a pod really.
Have fun!

You might have problems with the port on something longer than the 284 case in your Panda. It might be a PITA to get empties out.

That's not bigotry; that's merely your preference. I think what you mean is you're a Lapua 'snob', or Lapua-biased, neither of which are faults.

Trying to convey two things by using bigot. The first that I have a strong preference for Lapua brass. The second, and bigger reason, that that preference is at least somewhat irrational.

I try to be scientific in most things. But, I'm just a brass flat earther. I should give other brass a fair shake, but I don't. My hunting brass is even Lapua. That's kinda silly.
