My 30BR is giving me vertical ,need help before i loose what little hair i still have:confused:
30BR Rimrock BR action 1-17 Muller barrel TM stock tried 2 scopes Farley rest

34.5gr 4198 112 BIB seated .006 in Match load
avg. 3073fps
es. 17.14
sd. 6.78
Vertical

34.8gr 4198 112 BIB seated .006 in
avg. 3091
es. 23.68
sd. 7.61
Vetical

Brass is good with the exception i opened up the flash hole to .062(stupid mistake)
Gun is good, fairly new, built by Borden
Tried free recoil and shoulder, moved gun in the rest forward and backward
ANY THOUGHTS??!!

what weight is your rifle?
your loads are close to mine:
what distance are you shooting your targets at?
I find that with my 30 BR: is have two barrels: one is a straight 1.25 in for 28 inches: rifle and gun weighs: 17 lbs: this rifle I can shoot free recoil with gentle shoulder as it fires back when I shoot it.

my second barrel: HV contour: rifle and action: (same action above) weighs 13.5 lbs. this baby will shoot terrible groups if I shoot it free recoil, it is beast to shoot free recoil. When I shoulder it well and pin it into the front rest and fire it, it will shoot bug holes .

shooting technique is very important for the 30BR,
my mentor who also shoots 30 BR: is absolute amazing shooter: he shoots with rifle shoulder firmly each time

It's a 13.5lb gun and I generally shoot it free recoil. I shot it this morning after fluffing up the front bag and seemed to shoot a little better. I dropped the powder to 33gr and shot a few very good groups. I might need to shoulder the gun, not something I do very often so I'm not real good at it!

your rifle is 13.5 lbs, she will buck and bronco like crazy when shooting free recoil.
you are also shooting at higher node: for the powder: (the 30 br has two sweet spots: around 33.6 grain for me or the higher node: 34+ grains):
what distance are you shooting at??
I have always been a person who believes that accuracy is more important then velocity. (at shorter distances)
if you are shooting at shorter distances: (i.e. 100 to 200 yards, ) try the lower node: 33.6 grains or so , you might surprise at how well the lower node shoots also: you will be close to around or near 3000 FPS at 33.6,

try pinning the rifle into the front rest, then shoulder it well(but be consistent): then shoot it: I bet you will get much less vertical trying this technique.

also did not noticed that you opened up your primer pocket size,
why did you do this??
I would try perhaps shooting few rounds with brass which has no changes in the primer pocket size.

Shooting at 100,200 yards. The primer pockets were squared up, didn't ream them out. My mistake was using a flash debur tool that opened up the flash hole to .0625. Shot groups this morning with 10 cases I made last night with no primer pocket or flash hole alterations against 10 that had the flash hole punched out to .0625. The groups favored the smaller flash hole but not by much. I shot some 33gr groups that would go .198 this morning at 100 yards.
Thanks for the help

Jeremy, that sounds like typical 30BR shooting.
good shooting.
stick to the lower node for now: 33 gr area: especially if you are shooting only at 100, 200 yards, the 33 gr range will do well up to 200 yards.
my favorite load for 100 and 200 for me is my 33.6 gr
good shooting.

one other question! My high node starts at 34.2-35. This load prints lowest on the target
32.4-33 is the low node, this range prints high on the target.
With a 30BR do you tune it to a node or tune it to where you think it shoots best? I shot at a match in St Louis shooting 34.9 gr and snuck out of there with a win at 200 lacked 1 X at 100 and won the grand agg but shooting groups with that load looks terrible on paper.
Basically the gun shoots way better then I can at just about any powder charge which makes it difficult for me to tune. I can however indentify the low and high node on paper.
I'll work on the whole shoulder thing, I'd guess that this would cure a few problems at the higher powder charge. Breaks my heart shooting the low node!

Jeremy: with the 30BR i find the node to be very wide: mine will shoot well at 33.6(0.3 above it or 0.3 below 33.6), then at 200 yard and beyond it is a totally different load,
you shot the match in St Louis shooting 34.9 gr which is a great area for load at 200, i bet your velocity is about close to 3050 or bit more:
try an experiment: load two loads: 33.6 and 34.9 and shoot both at 100 and 200, and 300, i will bet you that your 33.6 load will shoot excellent at 100 and may shoot ok at 200 , but at 200 yard and 300 yard the 33.6 load will fall flat on its face.
My mentor also taught me a great trick: I run very little neck tension: i can push the bullet into the case with my finger: then I load bullet quite long so it will soft seat itself into the land when i close the bolt, my mentor feels by doing this the bullet will set into the land and straighten itself out into the proper alignment with the bore:
i tried this method and it has worked really well for me.
as for neck tension. the 30 BR does not seem to care much regarding neck tension, it just shoots lights out.
I am still learning with my mentors help on how to drive the rifle as I shoot with firm pressure on the stock and rifle pinned into the front rest.
My mentor only 45 years more experience then me: he is nearly 80 years old and still destroys us when we shoot out matches.
I think you will learn to love the 30BR, it is just alot of fun to shoot.
At our range here in washington state: Kenmore gun range, when my Mentors 30BR is shooting well, very few people can beat him,
i have beat him only one time: using a the 30BR which he cut the barrel for me and using the bullets he and I made together.
have fun shooting
