30 BR IMPROVED

Has anyone out there tried an improved 30 BR - 1 in 17 twist, 40 degree shoulders, slightly longer necks, 26 inch barrel - to compete like Mr Solyntjes at 500 and 600m, but also in more windy conditions. Will such improved version have any advantage over the standard chambering.
I have a 1 in 17 twist Border barrel and must do something with it,see my comments under 6BR for F Class) and will prefer an application in F Class.
Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris i do not think your 17 twist barrel would be much use for F Class as you shoot back to 1000 yards it is not group shooting either the target go's down between each shot and you are exposed to more wind and weather changes in your string. I think your 6mmBR or some type of BR improved would be far superior in F Class. Also not like group Benchrest shooting there is NO advantage in a larger bullet diameter as ALL bullets get marked as 8mm. Most shooting 30 calibre in Open use some sort of 300 mag as you have to push High BC bullets Fast to have the same wind drift as a 6.5 or 7mm. If you dont want to use the barrel for Benchrest and want to shoot F Class i would suggest you advertise the barrel on the Clasifieds section i dont shoot short range Group but im sure there would be someone out there that would buy your barrel then get another barrel that woyuld work for you. Also most ling range 30 cal barrels are 10 twist.

This is just great! Just another rifle for me to consider building this winter. I'm sure my wife will be thrilled.

ChrisNam, Just another thought about your 30BR Improved. Using a 30 caliber bullet in this size case, I really don't think that there is that much should to blow out. You might get little more powder capacity, but is it really worth the effort and will it improve accuracy over a superbly accurate cartridge already? My thoughts are NO! BUt that is what this is all about developing a rifle that will punch x ring all day long at over 600 yards.

GOod Luck.

Thanks for the comments and advice - both of you are absolute correct. As a game farmer in Namibia I ordered the barrel for culling old and injured animals from herds and then read the article on Mr Solyntjes new 600 yrds record. Immediately I thought that a 30BR might work over the shorter distances. It is quite common in South Africa and Namibia to use a 6BR at 300, 500 and 600m and then a 7mm - mostly 7mm Tombi,7x57 Imp)or 284 Win - at 800 and 900m. Incidentally the Southh African won the World Champs earlier the year with mostly 7mm Tombi`s.
ALO, your comment on the improved version changed my mind - I will go with the standard version.
Cheers
Chris
