30 BR build??

I'am thinking about building a 30 BR.
First off, I know all rigs are not the same. What works in one may not work in another.
With that in mind, I'am curious about setting up the freebore on a 30 BR barrel.
Are you guys that are shooting the 30 BR setting your bullets to a jam or a jump? And what's working best for you? Thanks for input and opinions, Mike.

I have 2 Kreiger and 1 Bartlien 30BR barrels with .020 freebore each,
shooting jammed square to square at this years Del state 100 and 200
shoot 250-23xs creedmore Dean Breeding for the win at 100yds.
This is what works for me.

I believe that the original "Robinette" reamer had no freebore. I have a PT&G "Robinette" reamer with .025" FB. I have another with .050" FB. That is the one I have used most. Jam is good.

What weight and design bullets are you guys shooting?
Flat base will seat higher in the case neck compared to a boat tail. That's where the question about throating measurement comes in. Short for flat base and longer for boat tails.

Flat base would take a shorter freebore. (because the bullet is shorter than the usual boatail)

Think about that. Both bullets being the same weight? Which one needs less freebore to reach the lands, and still have enough bullet in the case neck?

The VLD,, because it has a much 'sharper' (longer) ogive before you get to 'bearing' surface of the bullet.

IF you are comparing short bullets to VLD bullets, I fully agree on the original statement. I was referring to bullets of the same weight, such as 68Gr. FB vs. 68 Gr BT in a PPC case, just as an example. Not all BT bullets are VLD.

Depends on the bullet. If you have a "real short" freebore, the boatail can/may stick down into the powder charge.
With the VLD, you can probably hang it out far enough to stay above the powder charge. That's why you "plan ahead" when you get your barrel chambered or you limit yourself on what bullet you shoot. Too long of a freebore and it won't be too long before you can't shoot the lighter bullets and still have enough bullet in the case neck.
But, nothing wrong with having two different barrels with short and long freebores. That way you can shoot anything. 8)

So, are you planing on using long VLD bullets in the 30BR case?

Never shot a 30 caliber except in my M1A. I just like the built in accuracy of the BR case. Already shoot the 6BR, 22BR and a 6.8 BR wildcat. Thinking maybe 17 or 20 BR next? And no actual plans yet. Just trying to get all my ducks in a row before I make any decisions. Avaliable 30 caliber bullets will determine which reamer and freebore I go with. And I'am thinking off the shelf bullets for starters. The lighter the better then go up in weight from there.
And every BR barrel I have has been cut with the shortest freebore reamer so I can start out with the lightest bullets.
Went the route with a "off the shelf" reamer on my first 6BR.
Didn't take too long before the light bullets wouldn't stay in the neck and still reach the lands. Like I said, just planning ahead.

I shoot the Berger 110gr FB target and they shoot great i am going to try the 115 Berger
just to see how they do hope this helps.
