30 BR Alternate powder choices, other than H4198

Since we are considering the SAME case capacity/cartridge, and a small range of bullet weight, the burn-rate chart, as pointed out in post #3, above, is quite useful: looking at the current Hogdon rate chart, powders between about #65 IMR4227, and #82 Vihtavuori N-130 could/should prove useful . . . some, "who knows why" better than others.
I have enjoyed Grand Agg. winning performance via H-4227; Tu-2000; H-322, RL-7; Accurate 1680; and, of course, H-4198 - until dethroned, in competition, the king of the roost.;) RG

P.S. once the case capacity, and especially the bore diameter change, the burn-rate chart(s) become(s) almost useless: it's all about expansion ratio.;)

Further P.S. On the faster end of this scale, excessive pressure may well limit the charge weight: cautiously working up is smart. My experience was that with the H-4227, consistent (competitive) grouping was right around 29.5 Gr, which was just barely to the body/shoulder junction, and produced 2950FPS, +/-. Everyone I spoke/communicated with, regarding H-4227, & who tried it, could not keep from adding more, which universally resulted in large groups & wrecked brass - thus, it was, "no good".

Due to the capacity VOID, I went to H-4198 and N-130 - the former, in registered tournaments, proving more consistent at garnering fake wood. H4227 produced equal precision, but at about 100 FPS slower. RG

Not a good choice at all for a 30BR. Way to spikey especially when the temp goes up.
Jim, in my work with H4227 the temps didn't seem to be the issue. The issue for me was it would shoot extremely small dots right at the point where it rattled the back end of the cases pretty hard. Temps were 60 to 90 degrees. The charge weight at which this occurred did remain consistent, though.

I blended H4198 into H4227 (from 50/50 up to 80/20 of H4198/H4227) to try to calm it down some. What I perceived as the 4227 'trait' never went away. Looking back on it now, there may have been some things that I left on the table. .0015-.002 bigger at .200 on the chamber, aggressive sizing and another approach to the primer pockets (that I started doing after the H4227, incidently) may be all that's needed.

I'm going to have another lash at it. -Al
