30-6.5prc vs .300 SAUM why?

Rather than make an existing thread longer and potentially more confusing, I was wondering about skipping the DIY Custom reamers, dies and other accessorizing while using the existing .300 SAUM brass case to accomplish the same end results. To short cut one complaint, I have brass and have found a source for more.

The shorter barrels such as the 20-22" length work perfectly for this cartridge especially when wanting to use your suppressor. I built one of these in both the 7mmSAUM and the .300 SAUM with excellent results, in most situations exceeding the .30-6.5 PRC or matching at the very least.

Is it just the draw of a DIY project no matter the end results or is it the belief that it would truly be a better mouse trap?

Thanks!

:)

I'm using 300 SAUM in a 16" suppressed rig. It's near perfect for my needs.

I'm happy I went the easy route, 300 SAUM. I had a reamer made to optimize a S/A (AI mag no binder plate) with a 185 Jug.

You have to try stuff if you expect to find a better mouse trap. When it comes to Br level accuracy sometimes something that seems trivial can make a big difference. Plus you have lapua brass, still the best there is. Not saying the prc will prove to be better, but thats why we try stuff.

I suppose I should have referenced the thread before this as an example:

30-6.5prc

Hello,
Curious if this compares well to a 300wsm or saum?
Thanks,
Ken

This thread was not asking about benchrest but a hunting cartridge.

While Lapua certainly manufactures fine brass, they are just as certainly not the only ones anymore. This is more fortunate now than ever since Lapua has pulled back it's manufacturing of some cartridge brass for U.S. distribution. At least we have some quality brass to fall back on without Lapua's participation.

I can't agree more about 'trying stuff' since I've been wildcatting cartridges for several decades. Sometimes it's just because, out of curiosity, while other times it's a necessary adjustment to the original cartridge design to improve the performance.

:)

If strictly hunting, why bother with those when the wsm is out and proven? If not talking about BR level accuracy, what do those options give you? (And we all know how accurate the wsm is)

For hunting, if you want a .30 cal, and you cant do it with a modern handloaded .308 win, where you can push decent bc 175-180 gr bullets to 2700-2800 fps in 24-26” barrels which will hang with 6.5 creedmore ballistics with more energy, then the 300 wsm is called for. If sticking with short actions that is.
