30-30 expected accuracy.

A 30/30 is what it is, it was never intended to be a BR rifle. I've owned 4 over the years, and never been truly disappointed in any of them. I don't plan on taking one to deep creek and putting the smack down on Tom either. It does what it was designed to do in most cases, and I am sure with manufacturing being what it is a few duds have slipped through over the years. I am sure some have been rebarreled with a match grade barrel but unless it's one of the ones that slipped through and is incapable of shooting a group I don't see the benefit.

The rifle I'm working with is a 336 marlin. What would be acceptable 100 yard groups? Factory ammo and reloaded. 2.5 inch is best I've seen. This was with 180's over 4064 and factory leverevolution rounds. Anyone have some info that might help. Maybe my expectations of 1 inch groups was to high. Thanks for any information.

The limiting factor is the lever action, a 788 bolt action should shoot around 1" with good loads

A link to one of several posts my Michael Turner who pioneered the 30-30 to win many competitive benchrest matches. He had many posts you can find if interested. Bottom line is it is inheriently accurate, and a modern bolt action can be modified to achieve excellent results.

I have 2 bolt actions in 30-30, Rem788 and Bat B. Both krieger 17twist for bibs. The limiting factor for accuracy is the bench set up, flags and you. Treat it like a ppc and it will put a smile that’s wraps around my head. PS Mike Turner reamer.

I have a Contender 30-30 rifle barrel that shoots an inch group on a regular basis, using 125 grain BT’s, maybe 748 powder, used on a doe last year, did what it’s supposed to do.

I think 120's are plenty for deer hunting. I always had my best accuracy with Nosler Ballistic tips. Put a nickel sized hole right through every deer I ever hit with one. Drop in their tracks. If you can get it shoot closer to an inch, you have a lot better chance of placing a shot where you want it to hit. I'm in the camp of shooting them at the neck shoulder junction area, don't chase any of them if you hit them up there. The thing is to practice shooting off hand if you walk. If you sit, practice from as near actual conditions as you will have. Know ones gun and knowing where the bullet will hit up the success rate greatly.

I recommend loading ya own but I will say I used to find that Federal factory ammo was the most consistent. None of it beats what you can make yourself.

Sierra 150 RN over IMR 3031 gets me on average 1.5" @100 yds with an old Weaver 4X scope.

If I remember correctly, Mr. Turner's 30 30 benchrest rifle would agg in the .2 and .3's. His 30 30 was a known benchrest winner.

His name is Micheal Turner. He shot a 30/30 in Group and Varmint for Score.

His creation was a true labor of love, from his own custom built action to the meticulous prep work on the brass.

It wasn’t smoke and mirrors. The thing was a true sub .200 rifle.

If I remember, the 115 Berger was his favorite bullet.
