.30-284 Shehane

Has anyone worked with this caliber?

I am interested in expected velocities for 200.20Xs, 215g Berger and 230g Berger. I am considering an Fclass rifle with 30-32" barrel.

Also, for the bullets listed, do you have ideas on needed freebore?

What about powders that you expect to work best (was thinking H4831SC/H4350/RL16/RL23 class powder)?

Thanks for any insight in advance.

Any reason to pursue this compared to straight .284 Win?

Wade

It sounds like too much work for little advantage. The 215s have almost identical bc over a 180 hybrid and a 230 needs a magnum to make it shine. Get a 300 wsm and shoot the lower nodes. Less troublesome and it's a magnum if you ever need it. If you dont, shoot it slow.

Do you already have a 284 WIN? If not, that is where I'd start. A 30-284 Shehane will require custom everything, very expensive. As mentioned above, its a lot easier to use the 300 WSM and load it light: don't need to get any custom dies. Of course, you will need a magnum bolt for that. If you don't have a magnum bolt, try the 284 WIN or 284 Shehane: the gold standard.

30-284 Shehane is spliting hairs with old 30-06 you are looking at basicaly same case capacity and those more or less tap out at 2700fps with 215hybrids , and quality dies and brass are availible for 30-06

But speeds with 215 bergers are still not high enough to best the 7mm 180bullets that have slighty lower BC

Why anyone would be going for 30-284shehane over 30-06 is beyond me.

I run 284 shehane only because nowdays both reamers and dies dont present any more expense than straight.284win ,couple of years back before shehane dies were made by number of companies its was not worth the effort as gain over straight .284win is small

Why not a 30_06 or a 30_06 AI you can get dies easy

I have a 30-284.
It's just a gun I have kreiger barel on a predator short action.
I have only shot 178 elds out of it.
Mine has a short throat and can't seat the bullets long. It was a gun I bought and I haven't done much with it.
It will shoot the 178 faster than a 30-06 but slower than a 30-06 ackley. Mine would be about 75% of the way there.
I can look back in my notes for any specifics if you need
