.30/.284 project

It is proving difficult in trying to find some performance data on this caliber. It is my intention to compete out to 1000yds in F class with this one.
Could someone point me in the right direction?

I've heard of a few folks going that direction but have never met anyone who has actually chambered one up in 30-824. You might try asking over on www.long-range.com

There is data available in the book "Wildcat Cartridges". The article is on page 400 and is written by Don Young. According to the article, you should be able to use starting .30-06 load data to start with. The case volumes are the following, according to Mr. Young in his article. The .30/284 water volume is 4.4 cubic centimeters and the .30-06 is 4.7 cubic centimeters. Both cases were using Winchester brass for the measurements. The article shows load data from 147 grain to 180 grain bullets. You should be able to find this book in a library, order from a local bookstore, or order from Sinclair International. It is their item #BK584 for $36.50. I hope this will help you with your new project.

HI
Same place I got my reamer from for my 375/284 project- mix and match reamers and throaters to build up your chamber.
Use a 6.5/284 reamer with a 30 call pilot to make the body and a throating reamer for a 308 match chambering to make the neck and throat.

Just an idea.

It was actualy a joke he is using my 284 Match reamer and a tight neck match 308 reamer for the throat

If you decide you need a dedicated reamer for this, Dave Kiff has one shown in his book of chamber prints on P. 153.

as reamer design 0.340 is just OK, 0.175 lead can allow you to avoid deep seating and erratic sd velocity

good shooting

a 7.5x55 Swiss is basically what your doing. I use .284 brass for my k-31's. Arse is fatter on the k-31, brass is available from Grafs in 7.5x55.

You should be able to drive the 175's at 3,000 fps

RHINOUT!

i have a K31 and i handload 178 AMAX's with excellent accuracy. the barrel has a 1-10.63 twist. so maybe 1-10 to make it easy. here is a link for some load data for the K31. some guys use 284 brass. K31 Load Data. not sure this will help any but it might.

Recently talked to a fellow who's .30/284 has produced 3150 fps with 165's, but he's running it at about 3050 fps with better accuracy. He's very pleased with it. Looks like a nice step up from the .308 Winchester.

I have a 6BR reamer and want to rechamber a 308 barrel,1:14 twist) for 30BR. My gunsmith made a similar suggestion than you, but I`m not totally convinced. What about lead - can that really be cut accurately. If so, I will save quite a lot on a reamer. Give me your opinions please
Cheers

Ok well if you wish to make a 30 br the shoulder steeper on the br case and also larger so there is no problem there but you will have a problem with the neck lenght i will bet a 308 reamer will not cut a long enough neck does your gunsmith have a 30-06 reamer with a short free bore if so it would be a better way to go you use a 30 cal pilot on the 6mmBR reamer for the body then you use the 30-06 reamer or even a 30-30 reamer for the neck and throat. Where are you from? you might be able to get a lend of a 30 br reamer or a proper neck and throat reamer for a 30 BR.

Cheers i hope this helps

Anyone using 30-284 wish to comment on performance/accracy etc. I am thinking of building one to shoot 175g MK's.

Thanks

Hi i have been involved in building 3 so far. They work very well with 175 and 190gr projectiles. I would use the 190's if you have a twist faster than 12 because at the longer ranges the 190's have an advantage in wind drift over the 175 gr projectiles. You could also try the 210gr projectiles the powder we are using is AR2209 it is the same powder sold as H4350 there in the US.

Message me if you need any other info. It is a great upgrade to a 308 and brings it up between the 30-06 and 30-06AI.

Thanks for the reply. I am actually from Oz. Still thinking about this one. Another cartridge maybe 300 WSM. Not sure on quality of brass for this one yet. The appeal with the WSM is the shorter cartridge. I have a Hart 1A action to build this one on. The port length would suit the WSM.
Any thoughts appreciated.

Will keep you posted,

Dave Kiff can make you a 30/284 reamer with what every neck and throat you want. You also can use a Lambeth/Kiff Micrometer Adjustable Reamer Stop and mix and match your reamers and bushings until you get the right combination for the neck and throat. Simular to the way the europeans do their reamers.
