30-06 to 7mm question

How much performance loss would ther be if i just necked down 30-06 to 7mm? Would it be major or minor? Was just curious because of the 280 being longer to shoulder. How many grains less would ther be

Just make it an improved shoulder to .455" - 30* keeping the base of the neck at standard neckdown location. No loss compared to standard 280. Could be the RCBS 30* version I forget. It would probably take me over an hour to find that Sizing Die lol.

A 30-06 to a 280 Remington, assuming equal barrel length, loaded to the same pressure (assume 60,000+PSI), equal weight bullets in the 280 will be a bit slower because of the reduced expansion ratio. The 280 bullets of equal will have higher BC and SD, the 30-06 in generalmwill handle 175 grain and heavier projectiles better than the 280. If I remember correctly SAAMI may list the 280 at lower pressures.

Enough to matter? God that's the argument that has ruined many friendships.

The 7mm-08, 7MM Mauser and the 280 Remington are in my opinion very good cartridges for a 7MM field rifle. In that order from 200 to 400 yards on medium game.

In my opinion if the 06 shoots keep her.

I've shot a standard 280 for a lot of years. Alot of deer have not walked away from a well-placed 140 Sierra Gameking. I don't think the deer particularly care that the bullet was .284" instead of .308". I like the 280 Rem, I've only worked up one load with it and it has done very well for whitetail over the years. Longest shot with it was around 350 I think.

I dont have an 06 but i have brass for my 6.5-06AI and i want another straight 280 but the only 280 brass i can find is nosler and i will pass on that. So i figured if necked down 06 brass got me close i can use pretty much any brand of brass i want

There's instructions on line the 280 is just the 06 necked down and in my opinion it's one of the finest 7MM hunting cartridges available.

This might help http://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2511043/m/3631070901/xsl/print_topic

Performance at the same weight of bullet is one comparison. Comparing bullets that are similar weight range for caliber is another, i. e. Comparing something like a 140 in 7mm to a 165 in 30.

My experience with the 7-08 says I get higher velocity, slightly better BC (really doesn’t matter to me really), slightly less recoil and the deer can’t tell the difference.

Diameter, but that's a guess as I don't have the print at hand. There is lots of neck length to manipulate as well. The 280-AI has gained in popularity on the Forums, but there were 30 and 35 degree shoulder versions out there back in the day. The RCBS @ 30 Degrees used to be somewhat standard I believe.

The 280AI is now a SAAMI cartridge. I have the chamber print not the cartridge print. The shoulder angle is 40 degrees. Chamber oal 2.575. Diameter at the body shoulder junction is 0.455 at a length of 2.0923. Dies, reamers, cases, and ammo are all available but maybe hard to find.

30-06 to 280AI will result in a short neck, and I assume standard 280 would be worse as the 280 has about .046 more case length.

I looked into the same as I was interested in a 280AI, but the scarcity of good brass and inability to use 30-06 cases has me looking at other plans.

If I’m understanding this, you’re just looking to neck down 30-06 brass to use in a standard 280 chamber? If this is correct, then your cases will be short on length and you’ll need to fireform the shoulder forward. If you’re going to order a custom reamer, to fit the shorter neck length, you could get a reamer in 7mm-06 as another option.

Just do a regular 280 chamber. You can use 270 Winchester brass since it's the same length as 280. Or just neck down the '06 brass in a 280 die to make a false shoulder and fireform (if you're intent on using Lapua brass). That .046" difference in the case length won't amount to a hill of beans in your shooting performance. You may have a little more carbon buildup there between the case mouth and the throat, but every rifle has that to some extent.

Yea i was just gonna neck down 06 brass and send it in for a reamer it dont even have to be a 280 chamber
