30.06 Solids

Hemingway in Green Hills of Africa talks about shooting solids (220gr?) in his Springfield. Was such a load ever factory produced? Of course, one can currently purchase 220 gr. softnose '06, e.g. Remington, but I have never seen solids. The only possibility I can think of is Kynoch.

I believe Norma made a factory load for 30 06 solids but been years since I've seen any. Hornady did make bullets but again more then 10 years since I ve seen any. Ask around on some of the hunting sites you may find some. Not legal for hunting in most states and not legal in Africa anymore. Has to 375 and up for dangerous game.

Maybe these? https://www.midwayusa.com/product/5...ield-220-grain-core-lokt-soft-point-box-of-20. Hemingway was a writer and writers often get their guns wrong. Check out how many times Jack Reacher has thumbed the safety on a glock.
Hemingway was also a hunter and made several trips to Africa before he wrote the book, Green Hills of Africa. In fact I think he died before the book was finished and was completed from his notes.. 30 cal. Solids were real popular back in 50s. The only reason to drop them was hunting laws changed. Especially in Africa. I took some on my first trip to Africa for Buff. Back then a lot of small calbers had solids bullets avaliable. I know you could get 7x57, 8x57 and 30 06 loaded with solids. Mostly loaded by Norma or Kynoch.

And I just started reading this book too. Not about to be rhino hunting with a 30-06... Maybe a 458, but wish I had the where-with-all to have the old expedition type hunt that Hemingway describes...

Just for everyone's info, Woodleigh bullets still makes 30 cal solids. 220 gr avaliable from Midway. Made in Australia.

Some old Kynoch 3006 solids avaliable on several auction sites. Made back in the 60 with a nickel cased bullet also 220 gr bullet.

Another writer, Jack O conner, took 30 06 solids to Africa where his wife killed an Elephant with an 06.

Look around guys, the info is out there.

Have fun

Writer Sam Fadala (sp?) received an exemption from one African country to hunt Buf with an '06/solids because of a shoulder injury he was recuperating from. Seems it was 15 yrs. ago or so from memory.

Hemingway went to Africa in 1933 and again in 1953/54. Green Hills of Africa describes the first safari. His second safari is set out in True at First Light, published posthumously in1999 and later more or less revised/updated in 2005 as Under Kilimanjaro. For those with further interest in the Hemingway "mystique," check out http://www.ernesthemingwaycollection.com/about-hemingway/ernest-hemingway-in-africa.

I have been on safari in Africa twice, 1994 and 2001, and remain interested in all things relating thereto. My interest in '06 solids stems from the fact that I own a 1948 Mod. 70 Winchester in 30-06 equipped with the standard Lyman peep or receiver sight. I thought I would buy or load a few solids just to fantasize that I am hunting in Africa with Hemingway. Aahh, the Walter Mitty in most, if not all of us.

Woodleigh makes a good solid (never used the GS customs) and Peregrine also makes a couple solid copper bullets in a couple weighs in 308 up to 220gr, it still gets more use than you would think down here especially on small animals like duiker or steenbok where you dont want an expanding bullet to destroy the entire trophy of such a small animal.

For African hunting you are talking about non-expanding solids. Most of the bullets made by Barnes are expanding solids. There are a lot of non-expanding solid bullets for the folks that need them.

SheepDog, go do a search under Barnes. You can then say you did not know about what Barnes has made. They are listed in midway USA but they are discontinued.

wapiti25,
Most of the bullets that Barnes makes are expanding hunting bullets. They also make some non-expanding bullets. I don't see what your argument is with that statement.
