30.06 Reload Info

Anyone have a Swift reloading manual? I want to load 165 grain Scirocco II Spitzer BT's for my 30.06. I have IMR 4350 powder. Have read lots of suggestions to just throw 57 grains of powder that "works for everything" in 165 grain bullets, but I have read that since Scirocco II's generate higher pressure than other brands, be sure to use ONLY data from a Swift manual? Anyone have that actual data from a Swift manual? Also, how crucial is seating depth on that load?

Copied from the Speer Reloading Manual #14. These were the only 165 gr bullets listed. The scan was a little blurry at the edges...IMR4350 values are indicated with light gray arrows, the powder list for the right hand page is reproduced below in black.

It's always great to have load data from the bullet manufacturer. But I'm not sure what's so special about the Swift Scirocco that would make it generate higher pressure than other brands.

Regardless, I would certainly NOT "just throw 57 grains of powder..." and think that might be okay. QuickLoad, using its defaults, shows that load right at SAAMI maximum. And significantly compressed.

Absent any other information, and assuming this is a hunting load, I'd probably use 55.5 or 56.0/4350 as a maximum (cartridge integrity being imperative for a field load), reduce accordingly, run a ladder, and see what your gun likes.

Seating depth changes lots of things. But if this is a hunting gun, I imagine magazine fit is your biggest constraint.

I don't own the complete Swift manual, but I have one of those One Book/One Caliber 30-06 guides with stuff from lots of companies and the Swift data is on pp 106.

They did stop at 55.0 with H4350 @ 2772, 95% fill, using a 24" Wiseman test bbl. for the 165 Scirocco.

In my time, I tried the 165 Scirocco right up against the Sierra 165 Gameking, and found them to track very well with each other in a stock Remington bbl, so YMMV.

ETA: Just noticed you asked about IMR not H4350, that is shown at even less... with 53.5 at 2761, 92% fill.
They do not list the seating depth used, they only show cartridge max at 3.340"

I would always recommend you do your own work-up.

That's okay, we tried.

He shouldn't have any trouble with that particular bullet, like I said above I have probably tried them all at one time or another and it was just a typical 165 tipped boat tail. He will be fine.

Thanks Ned Ludd! Choprzrul had the manual for Swift listing 49.8 min / 53.5 max. Apparently the Sciroccos do generate some extra pressure. The loads for most other 165 grain bullets all run with 4 or 5 grains MORE powder. Thanks for your input!

Thanks Jager. Choprzrul attached the page from Swift. 49.8 min / 53.5 max. Must be something to higher pressure with the Swifts. I'd prefer the bullet exit the end of the barrel rather than near my face, so I'm going to load a few 50 grains and see if my gun likes them! Thanks for your input!

Don't take data off the internet...Buy the proper loading manual... Midway usa sells them for around $35 that's alot cheaper than an emergency room visit....
Good advice. Choprzrul sent the page from a Swift manual. 49.8 min / 53.5 max. 4 or 5 grains lower than what Speer calls for and info I read elsewhere. Thanks.

Thanks Choprzrul...exactly what I was looking for. Confirms theory...listing 4 or 5 grains LESS than my Speer manual and what I've read elsewhere!
that is why i like to use a cronograph. even a cheap one is enough to see about where you are in speed with your load and rifle. and compare with the books listing.
