30-06 or AI with slow powders?

JLDavid

GO BEAVS!!
Just wondering if anyone has tried H1000 or Retumbo with the 180 grain and heavier bullets? I have had really good luck with Retumbo in a 6.5-06AI and wondered if it would be worth a try. Any information is appreciated.

David

I had a 30-06A.I. for a short while for F-Open. I shot 210gr JLKs. My powder was RL-16. H4350 would work just as well and I suppose H4831sc would work well too. But H1000 or Retumbo would be like shooting H4831sc in a 6.5 x 47 Lapua. It would work>>>>It would go BANG>>>but it would not be very good.. It is ALWAYS best to use powders that are in the correct burn rate range for the intended cartridge / bullet combination...

I think you'll likely run out of case with the real slow burners. I cant get enough IMR4831 into my 06 Ackley to get up to speed with 180s although RL26 works very well (less bulky than other slow burners). @3100fps in a 26" bbl.

How temperature sensetive are the RL powders? I tried some 22 years ago and had some pretty wide velocity swings depending on temperature.

Thanks. If I can find a RL powder that is as temperature insensetive as the H Extreme Rifle powders I will definetely give them a shot. Usually the RL powders give very good velocities in most reloading data.

Edit: Can you use RL 23 powder with RL 22 data? Not interchange straight across but use 22 starting loads with 23 powder and work up to pressure while finding accuracy nodes?

Brett might know
@Steve Donlon might have some helpful information also.

Jim I'm shooting a standard 06' that I had the throat moved out .016" to shoot
185-200gr bullets keeping preasure ring above neck shoulder junction.

H4350 is my go to powder at the moment
56gr pushing a 185gr. jug @ 2850fps.

IMR4955 is a powder I'm playing with now
58.8gr, 185gr. jug.
Good case fill and accuracy no velocity report as of yet.
25 rounds loaded waiting for range to reopen.

Rl26- I will be building a load with this in early spring.
"I want conditions to be relative to what they will be in the fall."
I've heard of temp instability with this powder, so I believe you need to stay on top of your tune with the conditions more so than a Hogden extreme or Enduron powder.

62gr RL26 gave an astounding 2920fps pushing a 200gr Claymore last spring in initial testing.

That's an interesting result. Have you tested accuracy yet?

H4350 load is shooting in the .3's
IMR4955 load shoots a lil smaller but not by much.
RL26 was right at 1"@100 during initial OCW test.
I stopped working with this load as my necks were to thick and I needed a expensive lesson in neck turning. Lol

I've often found really good accuracy with Alliant powders I've tried 19,22.
RL17 seemed to be hit or miss day to day accuracy wise, but gave excellent velocities.
If RL26 will deliver .3-.5" groups consistently, "I believe it will " it will probably find a place in my load book for hunting loads.

As much as things move forward it's still hard for me to get rid of my 30 06's. Note the plural!

I don't target shoot except to work loads and zero but in the field they work as well as I do.
