30-06 long range hunting and accuracy loads.

I know some of you still use the ole 06 for long range competition, I also know its an accurate and lethal all around great hunting cartridge. What are some of your long range hunting loads and how successfull have you been with them?

This is not exactly an answer to the question you asked but, here goes. I love my garand (30-06). I love my Remington 7400 gas gun with 220 grain round nose as a brush buster. I have used the 30-06 as a working round for 40+ years. (not my only gun, just, the "ought 6" when nothing else will do). Now, that said, I have been reading about the new RL-17 powder and the 30-06, with people suggesting that the cartridge needs to be relooked with this new powder for heavy bullets. I would consider buying a barrel in 06 for one of my savage heavy guns and may do so for a long range hunting cartridge. With the RL-17 and maybe even an AI reaming, the 06 may again, come back.
my 2 cents on the 30-06. thanks rc

Go to the Sierra manual and look at the suggested accuracy or hunting loads for different bullet wights for starters. The 30-06 with a 180 to 220 gr bullet will kill anything out to 1000 yards that a 300 mag will if you put the bullet where it is supposed to go. You will need to figure your drop and wind for your velocity bullet combo.

Always had Good Luck using the 165 gr Partition using 56.2 H4350 Rem 9 1/2 primers in Lapua cases. The Ballistic Tip or Accubond using 56.2 H4350 & CCI 200 primers. Shoots better than I can. The IMR4350 works almost as good. I am curious to try the new RL17

2506,
your right there isn't much difference between the two,200fps or so. However the 220 gr goe's subsonic @ 818 yds in 06 and 891yds in 300. I wouldn't consider it a 1000yd load myself. The 180 sbt seirra is going 1280fps @ 1000yds in 06 which is still supersonic (stabelizing the bullet) and 1509 in the 300wm. just my $.02 worth
Wayne.

Glenn, I use 53 grains of IMR 4350 in Winchester brass, BR2 primer, and 208 Hornady Amax seated into the lands for Long Range shooting in my 30-06. This is right up at the top pressure wise in my rifle, so be careful and work up.

Glenn,
Send a PM to German Salazar. In my opinion he is the most accomplished .03-06 shooter in the game these days. He has a vast wealth of info about making this round shoot, especialy for long range matches. My hunting load (hot) is 58.5gr of IMR4831 under 165 Sierra Game Kings. This is HOT in my bolt gun and i do not recommend starting there. standard large rifle primers, magazine length. good luck to you.
Cheers,
Doc

Glenn,

Doc is right, German is the man!! I have only spoke with him once and have emailed back and forth a couple of times, but he always responds and is a real good guy. He will take the time to answer any question you can pose.

IMR 4350 most excellent in 30-06
57.0 with 165gr Sierra BT
55.0 with 180 Nosler part
H4831 or RL 22 with 200gr and magnum primer

Fed 210 primer in FC brass duplicates Fed Prem loads
Love the 30-06 since boyhood

Almost 12 year old thread. Are you answering an ancient question or just…um…what?

Been many years since I shot and use the great 30 06 but 150 grain bullets with IMR 4350 worked really well for me for deer. It's really more than needed for deer but better to have more than less. I used the Sierra Pro Hunter bullet, a no thrills but solid performer bullet.

The 165 bullets with IMR 4350 are an excellent all-around bullet for the old 06. It was the bullet I preferred for eastern black bear. Again, Sierra bullets.

With today's premium bullets, it hard to imagine anything better than the 06 for North American big game assuming you are not hunting dangerous game, i.e., grizzlies. These premium bullets provide an extra margin of performance which is never a bad idea.

I would prefer a 24" barrel over a 22" so as to take full advantage of slower burning powders.

I never used the 180's although a lot of hunters use them for moose and elk. Since I never hunted or shot either of these, I will defer to those who have.

It’s never to old to talk about the 30-06.
From NC to Alaska the 30-06 has killed game for me. A late 1979 Win 70 XTR has been my 30-06 since high school that year. Love that rifle and IMR 4350 and Speer Hotcor in 165/180. Long Live the 30-06 !
