30-06 and 125 gr bullets

I'm trying to get a Ruger 77 Mark 11, 30-06 to shoot 125 gr bullets accurately. So far I have tried 4320 and 3031 with poor results. Anyone have a load that has worked for them. This rifle belongs to my brother in law who has some health issues and recoil is a problem. I'm just trying to help him. Also this barrel fouls terrible in three shots. Thanks, Barlow

I've shot the Nosler 125's in a 30-06 hunting rifle with excellent results, but it's been a while. I don't recall what powder but I was loading for 3,400 fps. Pretty sure it was Varget. I know the load came right out of the Nosler manual but its an older edition. IMR4064 should work well, too. Hope that helps just a little.

Does it accurately shoot anything?
That's a good question. I haven't spent a lot of time with this rifle, but I use some 168 gr SMK I loaded for use in a 03 Springfield for foulers and rounds 2 and 3 from cold and clean are 3/4 or so. I was thinking this would be a quick and easy task, but as usual it ain't. Barlow

Since recoil is an issue with your brother-in-law, try a reduced load of H4895. They have this reduced load data on the website under "Data".
I never knew this data existed, thanks for the heads up. I wonder if a filler would be needed if this data was used? Barlow

I was going to try 4064 and 760 next. I'll keep you informed. Barlow

Isn't there a "CAUTION" in some manuals about reducing loads more than 10% of minimum? Something sticks in my mind about this.

If it's just for hunting, try a cast lead bullet or cast bullet load data, Bullseye or Unique powder (not close to my data to give you weight) 1350 fps. The 125's should do good to with the Bullseye or Unique, check out a cast lead reloading manual.

The same load that I shot the lead bullets, used with a 147gr ball and they shot great when I turned the bullet around backwards, squirrel hunted with that load. Sub-MOA at 100 yds.

I used a 125 Sierra in my 30-06 (and later 308) with 4895. I was never super impressed with the accuracy. It did shoot 168's very well...with recoil to match.

I think if I was looking for plinker type loads i would check out the Lyman reduced loads section for cast bullets. Really.

I load some 125's for a friend and have used them myself as well. Varget is the best powder that I've used & I'm about 99 9/10 % sure that the charge is 57 grs. Velocity is smoking at 3400. Critters don't like it at all. The charge will be listed on the Hodgdon reloading site.

Here is a site that has shooters report their loads: always verify loads with a loading manual...typo's

You may be on a snipe hunt. As you know 2 for 3 in 3/4 don't mean much. Clean it up well and verify with a borescope if you are able. Load some quality flatbase bullets, 150 grain Sierra GameKing will work, and load them with a book load of H4350. Try to get them as close to the rifling as possible and shoot 5 three round groups allowing the barrel to cool between groups. I think you will stop doubting the powder choices. JMHO

If recoil is the issue how about muzzle brake, recoil reducer in the stock and a better recoil pad?
