3 old timers

Guys, I'm a little surprised (pleasantly) about the interest in my suppressor judging by the PMs I'm getting. And there is definitely some confusion about what is legal and what is not. I know that you could target shoot with a suppressor but not hunt with one in Ohio up until early in 2015. But now it is legal to also use one to hunt with.

I'm definitely NOT an attorney but it is my understanding that there is a difference between owning one and using one. And my understanding is that ownership is FEDERALLY controlled and not state controlled. So it seems to me that if a NY resident (for example) wanted to own a suppressor so he could take it to Ohio to legally hunt with, that NY could do nothing about it since ownership is controlled by the US gov't. Again, I am not an attorney, so I am not giving any advice. Just suggesting not to assume you can't own one in certain states.

I've been asked how how I applied. I will explain, but I also want to provide a link to a forum that is dedicated to helping guys own and build suppressors, including getting the revocable trust set up and doing the e-file. http://sdtacticalarms.boards.net/
Step by step: 1. Set up a revocable trust, which can even be done online. With the trust, no law enforcement sign off, fingerprinting, or photographs are required. 2. Have the trust notarized and scan it into a computer. 3. Go to the ATF website and fill out a Form 1 (which is the build your own suppressor form) and provide a $200 payment vie credit card. 4. WAIT for the approval and tax stamp. In my case, it took 92 days.
Owning certain parts is legal and is well explained on the SDTA forum. Just don't convert the parts into suppressor parts until you get the tax stamp. The tube must be engraved with trust name, caliber, and a serial number (which you provide to the ATF on the form). When I bought my parts from SD Tactical Arms, they sent the tube to the engraver who then sent it to me.
The whole process is actually a lot simpler than it sounds.

Re: 3 old timers & 1 black chuck

A quick check of the NYS penal law indicates that possession, manufacture or use of a suppressor in NY is a felony. and an ugly one at that.

So local regs do affect possession etc. Feed laws must also be complied with, of course.
I am not an attorney, I am retired LEO...which is far better! 8)

Oh, and my last post doesn't mean I am not as envious as heck of Nomad for the quiet fun he can have!

I've seen a couple of albinos before, but I've never seen a black one either. Thanks for sharing and congrats Bill!

Don

Very cool Bill. Missed one about 20 years ago, my buddy got him the next shot. He would have mounted it but it was totally blown apart.

Thanks, Guys.

Very interesting, Snert. So I guess you can't go to another state (where shooting one is legal) to hunt with one since you can't own/possess one in your state. Sad. I sure am thankful I live in two states that are at least fairly progressive.

Shot 3 today and the farmer never knew I had even shot one. :D He said a big one was living under his barn. DANG!! He wasn't lying. 14.5 pounds of groundhog/woodchuck/whistle pig.

That is one well fed pig! Good job! Would still love to see some personal article in picture for perspective. Still very impressive even without the scale pic. dedogs

Thanks, Don. They just seem to keep getting bigger and bigger. I've only been carrying that pictured scale with me for about the last three weeks. Since then a 12 pounder, then a 13.4 pounder and now the 14.5 pounder.

Thanks, dedogs. Yeah, I know I need something for perspective. I had to climb over a board fence and just didn't feel like hefting my 16.5 pound Savage over the fence with me. I know - excuses, excuses.
If I ever get lucky enough to shoot one heavier than this last one, I promise to add something for perspective.

Jeez, snert, I just started carrying a camera and a scale. Now you want me to also carry a tape measure?!?! ;)

Small what, LP? Animal or foot? ;)

Stan (LitLBoy) came to my home from Zanesville today to go on a groundhog hunt with me.

At the first farm we went to we got to see an unusual sight - an adult bald eagle. I took the top photo with my camera phone on full zoom and the eagle was around 300 yards away if I recall correctly. Look for the small black and white dot near the center of the photo.

After Stan shot one at 257 yards, my turn came up with one at 613 yards. One shot and a tail salute. Stan was impressed with the shot and how quiet the gun was. But he later returned the impression by shooting a crow at an even 400 yards with one shot out of his 6XC.

The day ended with 4 kills each at three farms.

Edit: I just checked the top pic and you have to click on it to see the black and white dot.

Nomad,

i saw your truck, your RV...buddy I know you can carry a tape measure!

Are you still having good success with the HBN ???

All most forgot are these stainless barrels our CM I've heard HBN doesn't work well on SS.

Bill
Thanks a million for the hunt! Like I said first GH I've shot in over 15 yrs.. Coyotes have ate all of them here in the Zanesville area.
Stan

No problem at all, Stan. Glad to have you as a guest and I certainly enjoyed the day.

bdale, yes, I'm still having success with hBN coated bullets in stainless barrels. The 613 yard shot was from a stainless Bartlein barrel with 1124 hBN coated rounds down the tube. I should add that the barrel was ceramic coated with hBN before the first shot was ever fired and only dry patches - no chemicals - with an occasional nylon brush have gone down the bore.

Stan, I forgot to mention that I plan on being at the October mid range rifle match at Briar Rabbit before we take off for Arizona for the winter. Sure do like that match AND the egg shoot.
