Guys, I'm a little surprised (pleasantly) about the interest in my suppressor judging by the PMs I'm getting. And there is definitely some confusion about what is legal and what is not. I know that you could target shoot with a suppressor but not hunt with one in Ohio up until early in 2015. But now it is legal to also use one to hunt with.
I'm definitely NOT an attorney but it is my understanding that there is a difference between owning one and using one. And my understanding is that ownership is FEDERALLY controlled and not state controlled. So it seems to me that if a NY resident (for example) wanted to own a suppressor so he could take it to Ohio to legally hunt with, that NY could do nothing about it since ownership is controlled by the US gov't. Again, I am not an attorney, so I am not giving any advice. Just suggesting not to assume you can't own one in certain states.
I've been asked how how I applied. I will explain, but I also want to provide a link to a forum that is dedicated to helping guys own and build suppressors, including getting the revocable trust set up and doing the e-file. http://sdtacticalarms.boards.net/
Step by step: 1. Set up a revocable trust, which can even be done online. With the trust, no law enforcement sign off, fingerprinting, or photographs are required. 2. Have the trust notarized and scan it into a computer. 3. Go to the ATF website and fill out a Form 1 (which is the build your own suppressor form) and provide a $200 payment vie credit card. 4. WAIT for the approval and tax stamp. In my case, it took 92 days.
Owning certain parts is legal and is well explained on the SDTA forum. Just don't convert the parts into suppressor parts until you get the tax stamp. The tube must be engraved with trust name, caliber, and a serial number (which you provide to the ATF on the form). When I bought my parts from SD Tactical Arms, they sent the tube to the engraver who then sent it to me.
The whole process is actually a lot simpler than it sounds.
